Lead Practice 1 Radar Ban

September 6, 2018

Yesterday in Des Moines, IA, the Iowa Highway Patrol ordered a ban on hand-held radar guns.

This ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. Spokesman Adam Smith let us know “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Smith said. “The whole situation is under review”

This move is considered the first of its kind. Coming two months after officers in Cedar Rapids, IA, filed workman compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand-held units. State troopers in Iowa do say that they will still be using radar units with transmitters. They will have them mounted from outside of their cruisers until more knowledge is found about the hand-held guns.
