Police troopers could develop cancer from radar guns.

On September 2, South Iowa Highway patrol ordered a ban of hand-held radar guns. The ban was ordered as a precaution to protect the troopers from possible links between cancer and the radiation admitted from the guns.

Adam Smith said that “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.” This change is the first kind by a state police agency. This comes two months after three Cedar Rapids officers claimed they developed cancer from using the hand-held radar guns.

The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. However, troopers will continue to use radar guns with transmitters mounted on the outside of their cars.

NBA Players Decide to Resume Playoffs by Adrian Wojnarowski

On Wednesday, August 25th, NBA players chose to boycott their upcoming games, demanding change following the shooting of Jacob Blake. This morning, the 27th, the players held a meeting addressing racial injustice and discussing the details of restarting the playoffs. A big issue for the players was being able to use their platform to speak up on these issues, and the NBA is currently working on possibilities to allow them to do so.

The NBA ultimately came to the conclusion of restarting the playoffs as soon as Friday the 28th, but at least the upcoming weekend.

In class, we discussed news values and what type of impact they had on stories. This article has a few values worth noting, however I think the biggest one is prominence. I believe this because, since this is the NBA, it allows the players to have a louder voice and make a bigger impact on society than any regular citizen would have.
