Big Ten Football will Resume the Weekend of October 24.

The Big Ten Conference announced yesterday, September 16, that they will be starting their football season. The league’s presidents and chairmen voted unanimously to resume the season, because of a stronger confidence in the latest medical information.

Each team in the conference will play eight games in eight weeks, which allows no room for error. The Big Ten initially was one of the two Power Five Conferences to postpone their season because of concerns of the coronavirus outbreak, and the received a lot of heat for it. However, with a task force involved and daily testing protocols taking place, the Big Ten is back and ready to play football.

I believe that this article is news worthy because of its significance with the sports world today and the colleges future. Football produces a big majority of income at most colleges and without football playing, some colleges would have to make major budget cuts.

I did not agree with the Big Ten’s initial decision to postpone the season because I believe that young college athletes would be safer in an environment where the undergo weekly testing, and have to follow the Covid guidelines. The Big Ten expected that by postponing the season, players would stay at home and do nothing, however that is completely the opposite, because when put in that situation, you cannot expect the kids not to go out with their friends or go to parties, exposing themselves to the coronavirus.

Article 1 Reflection

  1. The area where I put the most effort in my paper was learning about the topic, I really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the NBA Bubble and everything they have to do for it to be successful. I wish that I would’ve spent more time getting better quotes from people inside the bubble.
  2. The most difficult part of writing this paper was finding the right article with quotes that correlated with my topic.
  3. My biggest problem I encountered while writing this paper was using my quotes in paragraphs where they didn’t stop the flow of the paper.

Classmate interview

Jacob Fierst is not happy with the Covid precautions taking place on campus.

Fierst says, “It is crazy coming to school and seeing people not wearing masks, in Milwaukee, where I am from everyone wears masks everywhere they go”. Fierst is shocked to see that the school does not make the students do mandatory testing.

Although Fierst still follows all the Covid guidelines, he does not see everyone following them, which he believes will result in an outbreak. “I don’t think we will be in school for much longer, I bet we get shut down soon”.

Story 1 Final

The National Basketball Association invented their own “bubble” in order to keep playing during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

In Lake Buena Vista, Orlando at Disney’s Worldwide Sporting Complex players, coaches, staff members, and many more people have undergone treacherous testing measures in order to continue the basketball season.  Averaging two tests a day, the NBA has kept out the Coronavirus.

In a recent Fox news article, Chris Mannix described, explains his two months of living in the bubble. Mannix says “Honestly, two months in a hotel didn’t bother me that much.”

He explains how this may be true for him, however it is not the same story for what the multimillionaire players are used to. Mannix states that at first all the precautionary acts seemed to be a little much at first; it was well worth it as the NBA reported zero Covid cases after the first eight weeks of action.

If the NBA could get everyone packed inside a place with no outside contact, they would be able to resume the season. The people entering the bubble went through multiple Covid tests making sure that the virus would be cut off at the door. Although, there are exceptions on if players can come and go. Players are allowed to leave the bubble for family concerns; however, they have to notify the NBA before they do. Also, when the players reenter, they have to quarantine until they test negative, keeping the virus out of the bubble.

Peter Botte of the New York Post recently wrote an article criticizing Denver Nuggets coach, Mike Malone, who called out the NBA saying, “shame on you, NBA,” for not allowing coaches and staff’ families to enter the bubble. Because the NBA recently allowed the players to bring three members of their family to enter the bubble. However, they did not allow the coaching staff any family members to come. Although they are looking at solutions to allow the coaching staff to bring family in as well.

Planning to allow additional family members to enter the bubble during the Conference Finals is the works. Sports Illustrated reported that the NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver said, “We are mindful of the incredible hardship these restrictions impose and wish it were not necessary for the health and safety of everyone involved.” The league also responded to the criticism with a statement saying that they are limiting the number of people in the bubble due to the highly contagious nature of Covid-19.

Tadd Haislop explained in Sporting News why the bubble worked. The NBA started the bubble by sending all the players and staff a 100 plus page document explaining everything that will happen in the bubble.

This bubble idea has started a trend in many other sports as well. As the WNBA have started their own bubble, and the NFL, NHL, and MLB have discussed the possibilities of starting one as well.

The 2020 NFL season might be the most anticipated one ever.

After coming off an impressive Super Bowl win, the Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to take on the Houston Texans This game is the first professional football game to take please sense the Coronavirus outbreak.

The pandemic forced the NFL to have its first virtual draft, and even made teams have virtual minicamps. However, the NFL has still found a way to start the season on time. Teams have made stadium regulations, for example, the Miami Dolphins are only allowing 10,000 fans to come watch the game, while still practicing social distancing. Also players and coaches are strongly encouraged to wear masks and social distant on the sidelines as well.

This season may be a little different looking, but the players, fans, and coaches are just happy they will be able to play.

Observation Assignment

As I sit and observe the first floor of the library, I immediately notice the quietness. My ears begin to ring as all I can here is the air conditioning running. The first person I notice is freshman women’s basketball player, Hannah Harris, I approached her to ask what she was working on, and her answer shocked me. Hannah was studying for her calculus test, this was hard for me to believe because taking a class that advanced as a freshman is very impressive. As I talked to her, I noticed eye balls shooting at my back, perhaps because I was the only one in the room talking. As I was receiving death glares, I turn around and notice a friendly face in Trey Powers. Trey is working on his accounting assignments while his legs are resting on another chair. I feel for him as I once took accounting and dreaded the monotonous tasks of the everyday homework. Powers legs resting is very understandable as he just finished a long week of conditioning and lifting. When I go to sit down, I smell the scent of hand sanitizer, which is a common smell on campus this year as we try to protect ourself from the pandemic. Although the drastic change from outside chaos to still noiseless life is shocking, I am not surprised as the library is a place of peace.

Gasoline Truck Overturns, Flooding Sewer Lines.

A Texaco gasoline truck recently topples over spilling gas all over 48th Street and Correctionville Rd.

This gasoline spillage caused many problems as the gas flooded into sewer lines in a 2 block radius. Four local families were forced to evacuate their homes to protect them from the sewer-line gas.

Fireman Climbs a 50 Foot Tree to Save a Cat

This cat belonged to Suzanne and Samantha Decker, daughters of Charlie and Kim Decker. Harwood climbed up the tree safely, however, fell the last 15 feet due to a dead branch.

However, Radin is in critical condition after the crash with a fractured skull and internal injuries.

The NBA recently allowed the players to bring three members of their family or lifelong friends to enter the bubble after the first round of playoffs. However, they did not allow the coaching staff any family members to come. Players including Lebron James have expressed the attitude change in the locker room after their families arrived. Even though coaches do not physically play, they still endure high amounts of stress and ware on themselves.

Planning to allow additional family members to enter the bubble during the Conference Finals is on the NBA’s mind as they stated, “We are mindful of the incredible hardship these restrictions impose and wish it were not necessary for the health and safety of everyone involved.” The league also responded to the criticism with a statement saying they are limiting the number of people in the bubble due to the highly contagious nature of Covid-19.
