Lead Exercise 2

Lucky fall prevents further damage for firefighter and cat:

It was a lucky break for a cat belonging to Suzanne and Samantha Decker. Suzanne and Samantha Decker’s cat was stuck in a tree at 102 11th Ave. when firefighter were called to the rescue.

Fire fighter Bob Harwood climbed 50 feet in to the oak tree to get the cat before free falling the last 15 feet. Both the cat and Harwood escaped a potentially deadly situation and came out fine. St. Lukes Hospital reported that Bob broke his leg, but will be able to return to work as soon as his leg heals.

Students are causing chaos at East High School:

East High School students seem to be acting out in anticipation of summer. Disgruntled students seem to be the cause of all the mischief going on at East High. Fifteen students have been suspended for a week and five of those suspension are for students who were caught smoking marijuana in the parking lot.

East High Principal Laura Vibelius has said that the general unrest among students isn’t due to the suspensions, but rather because of summer vacation being so near. Principal Vibelius says she will fix the problem and sees no continuation of these incidents in the near future.

Gasoline truck floods;serious for two hours

A Texaco gasoline truck overturned on the outskirts of town according to a police report. The truck tipped on the corner of 48th Street and Correctionville Road. The gas flooded sewer lines for two blocks around and was also in the streets and ditches.

This situation was serious for about two hours until the gas was flushed away. Cars had to be rerouted and four families had to evacuate their homes, but the problem seems to have been solved. Fire Chief Charles Hochandel said, “The fireman followed the catastrophe and hazmat procedures set up beforehand for just such an occurrence.”

    #1: Most readers will consider people more important than cats, so a “Fireman breaks leg” lead would be more effective.
    Also, you need to get the most important info at the top, then tell me the story.

    #3: Ok focus on the crash, though I probably wouldn’t put the “according to a police report” in the first sentence. We’ll be talking about attribution soon, but for factual info like this, it’s probably OK to not attribute it.
