Biofuels

For honors, we had to read an article about biofuels, basically summarizing up the effort of the past few years. It also describes many different ways to obtain ethanol and the research and process involved.

When the war in Iraq started, nobody anticipated that the war would take years and that it would practically encompass the Middle East.  It may not have actually gotten to that point but it is getting close.  Whenever there are “issues” in the Middle East, countries depending on the oil from the ME take a hit for one reason or another, which everybody has experienced at one point or another.  Well, we just got hit hard.  And biofuels became all the rage rather quickly.  Research is being done to effectively eliminate our need of oil, if possible.  That didn’t happen.  Instead, we threw away at least a couple hundred million dollars, if not more.  What kills me is how all of a sudden it sounded like a good idea to research an alternative to gas.  Couldn’t it have been a good idea back in the 1950’s?  Maybe we wouldn’t be in this pricey situation then.

Gasoline derived from cruel oil is extremely cheap, being freely available in group. The Middle East has, or at least had, massive deposits of easily extractable crude oil, making it very cheap. Being cheap, there has been no motivation for use of alternative energy sources. Now that prices are rising in response to war, greed, decrease in supplies (take your pick), people are finally trying to develop these technologies. Maybe if we had started development 60 years ago and integrated these alternative energy sources over time, it would have alleviated the rising costs. But, the really was no monetary gain, therefore no motivation from the private sector. What do you think? How can we convince people it is time to switch to alternative energy sources, when people are outraged at the idea of $4 a gallon gasoline? Have we become spoiled by these low energy costs? What do people have to give up in order to afford clean energy?

It seems to me that we would all have to give up our expectation to travel wherever, whenever we want, cheaply. With as globalized as our world has become (events happening here directly impacting events across the world), this seems like quite a sacrifice. At the same time, our technological advances have made such travel less necessary. Perhaps conferences and meeting for businesses and other organizations could take place virtually. Or, more people could work from home. I would be interested in computing just how little we would have to travel in order to conquer the problem with this solution (especially considering the ever growing population).

It would have been nice to start researching earlier. After all, we knew that we would not be able to supply ourselves forever. Although this would be nice, it would still cost a lot of money to research whether in the 1960s or now. We might have saved from so much war over oil, but I’m sure people would still come up with another thing to complain about and go to war over.

What in your opinion is the best solution to our dependence on foreign oil? Do we pursue alternative energy supplies or perhaps tap our own fuel reserves in Alaska and along the Gulf Coast? This is without a doubt a global issue with a national choice.
