For honors, we had to read an article about summer vacation for children. It talked about how it could be effective and how it could be not. Mainly, not. It said that summer vacation is actually more harmful for children in school than anything else. At least, that is their opinion.
Personally, I actually agree with this. It is quite harmful. There is no ifs, ands, or buts. It is. Yet, if we did not have the summer vacation, it would disrupt many people in running their lives. Summer allows them to relax or to get some certain tasks or opportunities done with. For instance, the best time to remodel is during the summer. Proper weather conditions and availability of kids are quite helpful. I should know cause I was subject to that. My parents really appreciate my strength then. Anyway, that is only one side of the argument.
The other side, which I agree with, is the fact that summers are more harmful to the students in school. Not college, but public school like High School or Middle School. In college, one can pretty much learn whenever. They have the time and money so why not? Anyway, a student in public school would truly start to forget what they were taught. That happened to me too. But, I only need to jog my memory and I remember it all. I am fortunate that way. However, there are other people that aren’t. Thus, they start to forget the subject entirely. So, a good way to fix that is to do what this one school in Des Moines does. Get rid of summer vacation and instead have 4 3 week periods of vacation. Obviously, around the important holidays. Seems to be working because their grades are better.
I agree that all year round schooling is definitely the way to go to improve students grades and be a competitor on the global scale, but it’s easier said than done. Many students don’t want to give up their ridiculously long summer to “help America”. It’s hard to say whether or not I’d even be okay with it because I’m so used to the system that’s already in place. I think more schools will become all year round and that slowly but surely more schools will catch on and hopefully change the system for the better.
Is your decision to support year-round schooling because of foreign competition, the betterment of individuals, a personal belief? What makes year round schooling appealing to you?
What point does school then become the life of the individual? Is this the way children should live?
The public school system was thinking about doing the year around school with longer breaks in the middle. I wasn’t sure that I would like that. I always ended up bored at the end of the summer making me want to go back to school. If I had multiple shorter breaks, I think I would be very tired of school. You wouldn’t truly ever get a full break for over a month. Would you enjoy the year around school? Or did you have year around school?
