I have to admit, I was not expecting this. At all. Anyway, after reading the article, it struck me that certain video games could be considered to be grotesque. For instance, Gears of War 3 is a prime example. In that game, you can cut an enemy to shreds with a chainsaw bayonet. Yes, a chainsaw bayonet. You can imagine what it looked like. Thankfully, it was against aliens rather than humans. Another game would be Dead Space 2. The only way to get rid of the enemies was to dismember the enemies. And these “enemies” used to be human. And the choice of weapon was a plasma cutter… Get the idea? Yet, society allows violence in video games, even though violence is most certainly frowned upon. But then what about the movies? They are also in the same category. So, what then? Get rid of them? My response: Good luck.
I definitely agree that some video games can be seen as grotesque, and I don’t just think it’s the gore that makes them grotesque, but also the reasons for the gore and violence (like how you mentioned the enemies used to be humans). I don’t think the author was suggesting to get rid of things that are grotesque; in fact he may have been suggesting almost the opposite. I think he wanted to make a statement about appreciating works that are grotesque, and reshaping/reminding the public of the definition of grotesque.
I really like your example of video games in works that are grotesque. I think that video games definitely are grotesque. We hear parents concerns with the “grotesqueness” of video games and how that may harm our society by causing people to be more violent.
