Disney+ grows by 12 million subscribers, better than what was expected.

Disney+ had major subscriber growth in this past quarter. The expectation that was set by analysts was 8.8 million. Disney+ hit that expectation and went above it to 12.1 million.

There were 1.9 million new subscribers in the United States and Canada. The total subscriber count is now to 164.2 million.

There were new movies added onto the streaming service such as “Hocus Pocus 2” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.”

Disney has more than 235 million subscribers across the streaming services. These services include, Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. Netflix, a competitor, said that they had 223 million subscribers, after losing 2.4 million last month.

This is news because it shows Disney+ is growing. I think they are capable of being more popular than competitors like Netflix. I believe Disney+ can continue to add large amounts of subscribers by adding new and popular shows that the consumers want to see.

Stuart Scott

Stuart Scott says after receiving the Jimmy V Perseverance Award, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

Scott is a sportscaster and journalist for ESPN. He is well known for his catchphrases, “Cooler than the other side of a pillow,” and “BOO-YAH.”

Scott talks about his journey with cancer and how important it is to never give up. Stuart mentions Coach Jim Valvano never gave up, so Stuart says, “I have a responsibility to also not ever give up.”

Scott has a strong support system filled with his girlfriend, sisters, brother, mom, dad, and boss. They visit, talk, and listen to him as he is battling this battle. This is something that requires support.

Something that Scott is proud of is being a dad to his two daughters, Taelor and Sydni. He invited Sydni up on stage to give him a hug and said, “Sydni, come up here and give dad a hug, because I need one.”

Stuart says, “When you die, that does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.” Stuart did pass away just a couple months after receiving this award. He did in fact beat cancer.

Media Comparison

The lead for the video was more interesting to me. It made me think about why the bears are causing the trails to close. It also made me want to listen to get more information. The lead for the printed version of the story was more in detail. It summarized the whole article.

For the most part, the two stories contain the same information. The print version has more information including what to do during an encounter with a bear and some facts about the bears feeding this time of year. The video was thirty-two seconds long. The print version was seven grafs long.

In the print version, there is a link to the park’s website where one can find how to handle an encounter with a bear. The video did not have any sources, other than the park. The print version also had statements the park said.

In the video version of the story, the news reporter gave attribution to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials when they said they would be closing trails due to bears. The print version had statements the park said, but they were not in quotes and the attribution was given at the end of the statement.

There were no pictures of the bears or the national park in the print version of the story. The video version had a picture of a bear and a map of where the national park is located. I think a bear growling would be a good way to get the attention of viewers. I also think having some pictures or maps on the print version would allow readers to understand this more.

I liked how to the print version added what to do if one is in an encounter with a bear. After reading something like this, I get curious on what to do if I encountered a bear. Also, there aren’t bears around here, so it is a good way to inform readers just in case.

Netflix will be offering a $6.99 subscription; however, this will include ads.

With this subscription, viewers will be seeing four to five minutes of ads per hour streamed. The length if the ads will be ranging from 15-30 seconds. For tv shows and older movies, the ads will be played before the start and during the show. For newer movies, the ads will play before the movie starts. The cheaper subscription will be offered starting in November. In addition to be offered in the United States, this subscription will be offered in countries such as Canada, Australia, and Germany.

Netflix’s chief operating officer says, “We believe that with this launch we’ll be able to provide a plan and price for every Netflix fan,” states the New York Times.

Netflix’s goal with the new plan is to bring in new customers and to cut down on the password sharing.

Boston Birkenstocks are a popular trend that are selling out fast due to popularity on social media.

The Boston Birkenstocks, specifically the taupe pair, have been seen on multiple social media platforms including Tik Tok. They can be described as a clog shaped shoe with a rounded top and an open backside, with a cork bottom.

Here’s what local retailers have to say about the popular Boston Birkenstocks. 

The taupe Birkenstocks have been the most popular, but a Scheels associate says “The taupe Birkenstocks sold out fast, so now people are grabbing other styles and colors. A lot of the sizes are sold out, including narrow and wide styles.” 

According to a Scheels associate in the shoe department, there have been multiple people asking about these shoes. Customers are coming in asking for the “Tik Tok Birkenstocks.”

Both Scheels and Rudolph’s Shoe Mart have some Boston Birkenstocks left, but not many. Scheels just sold out of the taupe and the soft footbed pairs earlier today. 

Famous Footwear doesn’t even carry them in store, and when they are in store they sell out fast. An associate said “We only sell the Boston Birkenstocks online. Once in a while, we will get a pair returned and they are gone fast.”

Paige, a Scheels associate in the shoe department, says that she has these Birkenstocks and “Tok Tok made me buy them.” She thought they were cute and fun. She also has other pairs of Birkenstocks.

“These are popular because they are a name brand and very comfortable,” says Paige. 

An associate at Rudolph’s Shoe Mart also commented on the reason of popularity and said “They are very supportive, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.”

Paige said that she knew about the Birkenstocks before they were popular, but she has heard people talk about them and seen them on social media. She said “Things that are on Tik Tok tend to pick up and be popular.”

On the Birkenstock website, there are only two colors of the Boston soft footbed style that are in stock. And the sizes that are available are 4/4.5 and 5/5.5. There are more options for sizes in some colors of the oiled leather pairs and the suede leather pairs. 

The Boston Birkenstocks can range from $140-$170. However, price doesn’t mean much to some people. The Birkenstock lovers are willing to pay double the retail price, if that means they will get to have these shoes. Some people are buying them in any size and reselling them on sites like Ebay and Poshmark for a huge markup because they know people will pay that price for them. 

A gal in Michigan, Sarah, paid almost $330 for her pair of Boston Birkenstocks. She says “You know what? I’m going to wear these, so it’s worth it.”

When asked about how fast fashion trends like this one affect the economy, business professor Dan Wubbena says, “There’s no impact because it’s a fad that will be over by the time we are out of school in May.”

The Boston Birkenstocks started to become popular in 2021 Youtube and Tik Tok celebrities were seen wearing them. Now, more people are talking about them so there are multiple websites that are sold out.

Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance has been opened after four months of being closed due to flooding this past summer.

This past June was a difficult time for Yellowstone National Park. There was flooding all throughout the park causing the park to close temporarily to visitors. There was four days of recorded rainfall along with temperatures rising causing snow to melt. This caused flooding and mudslides that destroyed bridges and changed the flow of rivers. The governor of Montana declared it to be a statewide disaster.

On Saturday, it was announced that the Northeast Entrance Road was opened to traffic. This means ninety-nine percent of the roads are now open since the disaster this past summer.

There is still a section in the road that needs to be paved, but that is expected to be done within the next ten days. Traffic will still be able to travel through, but there may be delays. There is also some work that needs to be done with Old Gardiner Road. This would include four miles of paving and five thousand feet of guardrails that needs to be installed. This road is expected to open no later than November 1 of this year.

Yellowstone National Park covers more than 2 million acres across northwestern Wyoming and in Montana and Idaho.

This is news because Yellowstone National Park is a popular travel destination for families. Yellowstone attracts millions of visitors each year. With the destruction that was caused, visitors weren’t allowed to visit in peak tourism time. In 2021, there was roughly 4.8 million people that visited Yellowstone. This is also impactful towards the wildlife that lives at the park. The flooding and destruction caused habitats of wildlife to be destroyed.

Connie Wimer

Connie Wimer is a business leader that leads young women to the path of success.

Connie is from a small town in Northwest Iowa, Merrill. She attended Morningside College after her teacher told her dad that she should go. After one year, she decided that it wasn’t the path for her. She has always had a passion for business, so she decided to be more involved with it.

In 1981, Connie bought a small paper company, with a circulation of about 700. Two years later, she expanded it, starting the Des Moines Business Record. Within the Des Moines Business Record contains other publications which has more than 20,000 readers each week.

Connie wanted to give a publication to young women to give them role models. She is dedicated to inspiring women to help other women.

Connie has also started annual events including Women of Influence and Forty Under 40 which allow women and young people to be recognized for the work they put into their communities.

Connie’s advice for young people is “Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you.” This will allow one to learn and grow as a person. One should grab every opportunity for lifelong learning. Connie also said “If you’re not scared of your job, then you need to get a new one.” One should never be content with where he or she is at.

Connie has a list of five traits that if one follows he or she will be successful: integrity- do the right thing, risk taking-“Taking risks is like a muscle, the more you use it, the more it strengthens,” perseverance- you will learn, becoming an agent of change-“Don’t wait to respond to change,” and creativity- be creative.

The Connie Wimer Leadership Program (CWWL) is named after Connie Wimer for her success and achievements she has reached throughout her life.

Both Emily Kestel and Emily Barske work for Connie’s publication company and here’s what they have to say about Connie. Emily Kestel says “I have recognized the path Connie has paved for us and I will do the same for future women.” Emily Barske says “Connie has positive energy and is innovative.”

Connie says “its been a million baby steps” to get to where she is now. She encourages young people to “Accept failure as a learning process.”

Descriptive Writing

When taking a bite of a carrot, one hears a crunch. The taste is full of juice with a hint of ground or dirt flavor. The bright orange color reminds one of the bright orange tulips blooming in the beginning of spring. The shape of the carrot was almost a rectangle, but it was a bit deformed.

The crinkling of the clear package as one unwraps the banana Twinkie. The banana smell leaks out from the unwrapped package and flows to the nose. The smell is banana, almost like banana laffy taffy. After taking a bite, one feels the spongy texture in his or her mouth. Inside the Twinkie, is a white filling. The filling is light and fluffy like whipped cream.

Boston Birkenstocks are a popular trend that are selling out fast due to popularity on social media.

Lately, a new trend has been everywhere. This trend is the Boston style Birkenstocks. These Boston Birkenstocks have been on every social media platform specifically Tik Tok. Unfortunately, they are sold out on Birkenstock’s website. Only a few small and big sizes remain in a few colors. 

If a Birkenstock lover wants these shoes, he or she will have to wait until they are restocked or watch for updates on the Birkenstock subreddit. This allows people to post updates about when styles are back in stock. 

Some people are buying them to resell, at a marked-up price. The buyers know that will make money on them because it’s a hot item that everyone wants. 

Sarah Cowie, an accountant in Michigan says “Some people are like, ‘Hey, they’re really cute,’ and some people think they’re a potato shoe.”

Cowie bought her own pair for about $330 on Poshmark because she says she is going to wear them and it is worth it. 

In 2021, the Boston Birkenstocks were being modeled by celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Emma Chamberlain, and Kaia Gerber. 

Madison Kircher reports in a New York Times article that the sales of these shoes are up double digits according to a spokesperson for Birkenstock. The spokesperson also stated that “Consumer demand for Birkenstock has exceeded supply for ten years now.”

Peloton lays off 500 more employees after three previous rounds of cuts.

Peloton, which are known for their exercise equipment is laying off 500 more employees in effort trying to make up for loss business. The company will now be left with 3,825 employees. This is the fourth round of layoffs this year. Prior to June 2021, Peloton employees more than 6,700 people.

Peloton’s exercise equipment was popular during the pandemic because gyms were closed and people still wanted to exercise. Now that gyms are back open, Peloton is suffering because people aren’t buying equipment for themselves. They are going to gyms where they can use the equipment at a membership price.

Peloton reported a $1.2 billion loss in the latest quarter, which would be the sixth losing quarter in a row.

I think this is well written. It is easy to follow along with and is simple. This is news because this is impactful for the company. Unless another pandemic hits that shuts everything down again, Peloton may have a hard time with sales, unless they come up with a new product or service. This is also impactful for the employees. Many employees have already lost their jobs. There may be more employees’ time coming to an end as well. If the employees lose their jobs, then they will have to find somewhere else to work, so they will be able to afford housing, groceries, and other necessities.
