Rachel’s Running as a Mustang

Rachel Kenny is a senior at Morningside University. Out of all the activities Rachel has been apart of the last four years, running has been her favorite.

While in college, Rachel ran cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. She is graduating early so that means she will not be running indoor and outdoor track this season.

Rachel is the youngest in her family. Running runs in Rachel’s family. Her two older brothers both ran cross country and track. Rachel has been running track since seventh grade and cross country since eighth grade. Rachel has been running for a whole decade!

Between cross country and track, Rachel’s favorite is cross country. She says, “It’s more fun as a distance runner. Running in circles is not as fun, and it is much easier for me to lose focus on my race during track than it is in cross country.”

All throughout her time running, Rachel has been teammates with many runners. After 10 years of running, Rachel says, “I have met some the best people and have had some great memories.” One person that running has brought her closer to is Sarah Bosch. Rachel and Sarah have known each other since freshman year. The two have been roommates for the past two years now.

Teammate Sarah Bosch says, “She has been my bus buddy to every meet and we could talk for hours or just sit in silence. She’s funny and likes to joke around, but she can be serious when she needs to be.”

Freshman teammate Ella Stapek, who has only known Rachel for one cross country season, says, “Rachel is hardworking, prepared, there to help, and a leader.” Ella also notes that, “Rachel has a big heart and a positive attitude.”

As life goes on, challenges appear. The challenges take a strong leader to overcome them and to learn from them.

Rachel has had to jump over multiple hurdles in her running career. Although, not actual hurdles. One hurdle Rachel had to jump is when Coach Nash resigned. Nash was Rachel’s coach for the first three years of college. She felt bitter sweet about it. She says, “Coach Nash was the reason I came to Morningside, so him leaving was definitely sad. He was a great coach, but I understand why he chose to resign for his family.”

Through this obstacle, Rachel never thought about not running because of a new coach. She knew she always wanted to run. Rachel says, “Having a new coach gave me the opportunity to see running in a different light.” The uncertainty in the process of finding a new coach was difficult, but once there was one, the transition went well.

Teammate Ella Stapek comments, “She is an amazing role model as she demonstrates all the qualities a leader should have.”

Running for ten years is something that not every student can do. Out of the many races Rachel has ran, her first and last collegiate races are her favorites. The first meet of the season for Morningside is at Augustana in Sioux Falls. The collegiate races take place when it’s dark, so runners and fans can wear glow sticks. After competing at Augustana, Rachel says, “Everyone on the team made me feel like I could accomplish anything even as a freshman. I kind of ran with no regrets or expectations which just made it a fun race.”

Rachel’s final collegiate race was a favorite because of the experience. She traveled to Jamestown, North Dakota for the GPAC Conference meet. Rachel’s thoughts on her final race are “I got to soak it all in knowing that it would be the last time I raced with my teammates. I got to experience it with some of my best friends. It was more of a reflection meet on how far I’ve come as a person through running. Running has made me who I am.”

Also in Rachel’s last season, she was the team captain for the women. She was nominated last year by the whole team. Rachel was in this position because she is a leader not only for the women on the team but for others as well. Underclassmen look up to her and go to her for advice because she has multiple years of running under her belt. Bosch says, “She is very knowledegable about the sport and understands the behind the scenes work that goes in.”

Teammate Sarah Bosch finalizes her thoughts on Rachel by saying, ” She has always been a leader. The team really respects her and looks up to her.”

Through running, Rachel has met many great people, has learned to overcome obstacles that she never saw coming, and has learned to be a leader.

A zoo favorite, Homer, has passed away

A zoo favorite, Homer the polar bear, passed away this morning at the Midland Zoo.

Homer was the oldest bear at the zoo with an age of sixteen. He was found by a zookeeper floating in the pool of the polar bear exhibit at 7 a.m. According to the zookeeper, the other two polar bears were removed from the exhibit and are being monitored by staff.

After finding Homer, zookeeper Sara Getty says, “Homer was a very curious and playful polar bear and we will miss him terribly.”

Zoo director, Chris Bacon, says, “We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died. Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo.”

In response to Mr. Bacon’s statement, Dr. Shanda Lear, who is the senior staff veterinarian at the Midland Zoo, says, “The zoo will perform a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death. There results will not be available for several weeks.”

Press Release

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/subway-unveils-the-worlds-first-footlong-cookie-only-available-on-national-cookie-day-301690170.html

This is about Subway is going to release footlong cookies on National Cookie Day. There will be four on the menu, and they will be a first come first serve basis. The audience are Subway lovers. Especially people who love the footlong sandwiches and the cookies. The benefit to the reader is make them aware that this will be a new thing and how to get one of these cookies. If the cookies are a big hit, Subway could bring more into more locations and make it a more common thing. Subway is also offering a discount on a footlong sub if the customer buys a cookie online or on the app. This has probably been the most interesting story I have wrote about. This press release has a lead. There are quotes from Subway.

Man survives fall from cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Carnival Valor cruise ship had just left New Orleans to set sail towards Cozumel, Mexico.

A man was reported missing by his family on Thanksgiving morning after not seeing him since 11p.m. the previous night. The man, James Grimes who is twenty-eight years old, was traveling with his parents and siblings. After the crew members were notified, they began searching passengers’ cabins, but found no sign of him.

More than nine hours after his family reported him missing, a tanker that was passing by saw the man in the water and notified the Coast Guard. He was spotted near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Rescuers said Grimes was treading water and struggling to keep his head above water.

Grimes was pulled out of the water by a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. He was in shock and extremely dehydrated, but in stable condition. His family said he was an exceptional swimmer. He treaded for hours in the sixty-five to seventy degree water in the Gulf of Mexico. Grimes also faced three to five foot waves and the wind. Coast Guard officials say bull sharks and blacktop sharks are common in this area.

This is news because this kind of thing doesn’t happen often. The article says chances of this happening is remote, but the results are often deadly. In 2019, twenty-five people fell overboard and only nine were rescued. I don’t think I would survive this if I was in this situation. I would try to, but I am not the best swimmer. I have also never been on a cruise ship. I don’t know if it would even be easy to fall overboard or if one would have to basically jump off.

Morningside News Story

TikTok influencer, Katie Sigmond, is fined after golfing in the Grand Canyon.

Katie Sigmond is a TikTok influencer that posts workout videos and has seven million followers. Katie placed a ball down on a rock at the Grand Canyon and hit the ball. The ball wasn’t the only thing that went soaring into the air. The club did too. It was all caught on camera and of course posted to TikTok.

At first authorities did not know who was responsible for this video. Tips were received and soon a name was revealed, Katie Sigmond.

The Grand Canyon National Park posted a picture of Katie hitting the golf ball and commented, “Do we really need to say don’t hit golf balls into the Grand Canyon?”

Joelle Baird, a spokeswoman for the Grand Canyon National Park’s Office of Public Affairs said Sigmond was charged with littering, tossing items into the Grand Canyon, and creating hazardous conditions.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona decided on an out-of-court agreement which resulted in a fine.

The amount of the fine is unknown, but similar cases have fines that are $280. The video has been deleted from Sigmond’s social media pages.

I thought this article was wrote well. It was easy to follow along. I lost interest when it started talking about another incident that happened.

This is news because it’s something that doesn’t happen all the time. I think that some people would be very upset about this because the Grand Canyon is a national park.

Classmate Anecdote

Sina Diaz is on the Morningside dance team. From dancing, she has learned to be a perfectionist.

In dance, it is common for dancers to be perfectionists because they want to make their routines perfect. A specific time when Sinay showed her perfectionism is when she was performing at the National Championships. Apart of the National Championships, there were two performances. The first is the preliminaries and then the finals. After performing at the preliminaries, the team was ranked first. Instead of celebrating, like most teams would do, Sinay and her team reviewed film to see what they needed to improve on for the finals.

At the time of the National Championships, Sinay was a freshman. She felt a lot of pressure to perform at the championships. Sinay says, “I didn’t want to be the reason we didn’t win.”

Even if Sinay had a perfect performance, she would always look back on film to find something to work on because she says, “I never felt satisfied.”

Extra Credit Writing

As I passed by my desk in my dorm room this morning, I noticed the bag of cuties sitting on top of my desk. I thought to myself that they are still good to eat, but then I realized they have been sitting there for almost two weeks. I had one a couple days ago actually, and it was soft. It still tasted good, but I could tell that they had been sitting for awhile.

Under the netted bag appears to be nothing. No juices leaking from the textured orange spheres, no fuzzy white mold, and no smells are present from the oranges. I was expecting the oranges to have rotting juices leaking from under the bag, soaking into all of my papers and other things on my messy desk. I for sure thought they would be covered in mold, but they were not. There was no sign of any destruction that the orange spheres may have caused; not yet anyway.

The oranges are beginning to feel soft. Through the blue netting I can see brown spots starting to appear. No smells yet, but do oranges smell when they rot?

There are still probably twelve oranges in the bag that might not ever get the chance to be enjoyed. Instead they will sit rotting and withering away either on my desk or in the dumpster when I finally decide to throw them away. Perhaps next time I buy a bag of cuties, they will be eaten before they start to get soft and gross.

Story #3 Script

Intro:

Hello this is Paige and this today’s news.

Murder:

A man has been charged with first-degree murder with a stabbing in Galva, Iowa. A 24-year-old has been charged with the murder of this brother who is 26 years old. The brothers got into a fight outside the home of the 24-year-old. The victim, the 26-year-old, suffered stab wounds to the chest and abdomen and died at the scene. The murder was a knife which was found in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Jaeden’s Statement Murder:

Here is what Jaeden has to say about it. He is from the area. It is a tragic deal. It is hard to believe like this can happen in such a small town.

Netflix:

Netflix has released a new subscription plan that is $6.99 a month. This is lower than the basic plan by three dollars. However this plan will have ads. The ads will range from 15 to 30 seconds. For tv shows and older films, the ads will be played before and during the show. For new films the ads will be played before the movie begins. This option will have 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour of content watched.

Jaeden’s Statement Netflix:

Jaeden is here with me, and he has a Netflix account. Jaeden what do you think of this new plan? I don’t think its bad. It’s another option for people how want to spend that much and don’t care if they listen to the ads. And if you don’t want to listen to the ads then you will have to pay more, that’s just the way it is.

Mike McCarthy:

Former Green Bay Packers head coach said Green Bay will always be a special place. Mike McCarthy is now head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Mike is originally from Pittsburgh, but Green Bay was his home almost 13 years while coaching the Packers. Some of his kids were born in Green Bay, while the others were raised there. Also, Mike’s wife is from Green Bay. Mike McCarthy will be back in Green Bay with his Cowboys on Sunday to take on the Packers. It will be an emotional day for him.

Jaeden’s Statement on Mike McCarthy:

Jaeden is here and he is a Packers fan. It’s just a special thing. Once a Packer, always a Packer. The fans there are like family. It’s a good deal.

Outro:

That wraps it up. This has been Paige with the news.

A man is charged with first-degree murder after stabbing his brother in Galva, Iowa.

On November 13 at about 7:30 p.m. 24 year old Jesus Diaz stabbed his 26 year old brother, Eduardo Diaz III. A fight was started outside of Jesus’ house where Jesus stabbed Eduardo multiple times in the chest and abdomen. Eduardo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported Jesus punched and kicked Eduardo after he fell onto to the sidewalk. A witness was attacked in the area.

Before the EMS arrived at the scene, Jesus was seen putting the bloody murder weapon into the vehicle outside of his home.

Jesus Diaz is currently being held in the Ida County Jail.

This is news because Galva is my hometown. Galva is a very small town of about 400 people. Things like this don’t happen often in small towns. It is scary because I live there and it’s a small town where everyone knows everyone. However, I did not know the Diaz brothers.

Popular glaciers could disappear within the next thirty years.

UNESCO, United Nations’ educational, scientific, and cultural organization started the World Heritage List in 1978 which has popular tourist destinations worldwide. Some destinations include the Great Wall of China and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Being on this list means a location is a top tourism destination.

Another place on this list are the glaciers at Yosemite National Park. A report from UNESCO last week said by 2050 a third of them are expected to disappear due to climate change.

Other glaciers that are expected to disappear are the last ones remaining in Kilimanjaro National Park in Africa, Mount Kenya also in Africa, Italy’s Dolomites, and ones on Pyrenees’ Mount Perdu.

There will be a climate change conference in Egypt; however, this creates the challenge of traveling to this event. Traveling has a carbon emissions footprint of eight to eleven percent. Aviation has seventeen percent of carbon emissions.

A UNESCO researcher says, “The glaciers will disappear regardless of any climate scenarios.”

This is news because if the national parks or places where glaciers are present disappear, then people will have less choices to travel to. Countries that have a park that brings tourists into the country could potentially lose business. Tourists are coming in to look at the glaciers, but they are also looking at other things too. They also have to eat and may want to shop, so this creates business for these countries.

I have never seen any of the glaciers across the world, but I would like to at some point.
