Ban On Cancer-Causing Hand-Held Radar Guns

On September 6th, East Dakota Highway patrol ordered a ban of hand-held radar guns due to the possible risk of cancer.

There are concerns that the longterm exposure of radiation waves from the guns could develop cancer. The ban was ordered two month after three municipal officers in Central City filed compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand-held radar guns.

70 radar guns will be withdrawn from service. State troopers will continue to use radar units, but they will be mounted on the outside of their patrol cars.

Adam Smith, spokesman of the East Dakota Highway Patrol, states, “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue. The whole situation is under review. The move is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency.

News Comment #2- Saudi Cuts Send World Diesel Prices Soaring

Saudi Arabia and Russia are cutting their oil production. The cuts of oil production are showing an immense affect to diesel prices. Diesel prices have rose 40% since May in the United States and Europe. In fact the cost of diesel has increased by 42 cents per gallon. Europe is now producing less diesel due to the cut in oil production. They are purchasing the United States crude, which is way lighter. The lighter crude are typically used for gasoline. Saudi Arabia and Russia produce heavier crude which is better suited for diesel.

This news story is considered news because it has a big impact on many people. Every person who drives a diesel truck or purchases diesels is affected. They have to spend a lot more than what they used to. It also affects the economy. If people have to pay more for fuel, they are less likely to spend money elsewhere since fuel is considered a necessity. I also found the lead of this news story to be very good. It is short and to the point, but readers can still get the idea about who, what, and where. It also is written very well. The writer wrote the most important facts at the beginning.

News Comment #1- Four Dead in Upper West Side Apartment

A family of four – a father, mother, and two sons – were found dead inside their locked apartment. Investigators found three knives on the scene, one of them being by the bed where the father was found dead. The father and mother had fatal injuries on their necks. Officials are currently not looking for suspects. The family was discovered when a worried relative came to check on them. He discovered the door was locked and drilled a hole in the door to look inside. Soon after, he called 9-1-1. Friends and neighbors describe the father as a calm, loving father, and nice. The police were investigating this as an attack. Officials did not say whether this is investigated as a murder-suicide.

This story is considered news. The story unfolds a story about a very tragic and unanswered event. Because it is very tragic, it interests many people. Families do not just die in their own apartment or house. The story is considered “Breaking News” because there are so many questions that are not answered. It is also considered news because it happened very recently, so it is relevant today. The story is also factual, and not based on opinions. There is not a single opinion shared in the story, which makes it considered to be news as well.
