News Comment #2 – Now He Wants It

This week’s news article I chose is about a homeless man in Philadelphia who gave a stranded couple his last $20 so they could buy gas, and they were so inspired that they started an online fund-raiser to help him. I believe that this article is very newsworthy not only because of the story but because of the twist nobody saw coming. The goal on GoFundMe was set at $10,000. But over nine months, more than 14,000 people donated over $400,000 to the homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt Jr. But…he has yet to see the money the couple raised.

Homeless man, Mr. Bobbitt, has a lawyer representing him at no charge, and has facts that aren’t matching up with the couple’s supposedly facts about buying Mr. Bobbitt things and what not. Mr. Bobbitt’s lawyer mentioned in the article that Mr. Bobbitt wants the money put in a trust and assistance figuring out how to spend it.  Moral of the story is that Mr. Bobbitt wants his money and he wants a home. This article can really appeal to any audience that finds it interesting, and controversy. I heard something about this story before, but never to this extent.

News Comment #1 – Supremacists

This week the news comment is on the NPR story “How the media covers white supremacists.”  In this article Karen Grigsby Bates is interviewed by Lakshmi Singh. The interview talks about how to cover the white supremacist, and if they should cover events like the rallies, and how much time should be given to them on the news.  Some people are saying that it should get just as much time as any other story and there’s no need to add more fire to the fire by giving it more coverage.

I believe that the audience of this article is everyone.  With this article/interview I feel like that both sides were represented and it just depends on everyone’s opinions with this topic. I liked that reading this you can get the original words that came out of the speakers’ mouths.  Most of the time it may be paraphrased, but it was different for this article.

Your Mustang Volleyball Setter!

Meet Callie Alberico!

Callie is a junior from Blair, NE and she is majoring in business. She is a setter on the Women’s Volleyball team and works in the Morningside Admissions Office and at Buffalo Wild Wings.  She has one sibling, a sister, that is older then her and attends UNL in Lincoln, NE.  What Callie said brought her to Morningside was the volleyball program.  Though she is still close to home, she at the same time wanted to get away and see something new, and Morningside is just that.  She also has family that lives up here, in Sioux City, which provides her with some comfort.

When thinking about Law School, Callie isn’t sure which area she would like to go into but she’s thinking divorce law mediator of some sort and/or custody agreement.  She wants to see if she could help two significant others work things out, and with custody agreement she would want to deal with kids and make sure they go on a positive path.  One of the things on Callie’s bucket list is to be a Judge.  She says she’d like to be a judge because then she would be able to decide the fate of people and help rebuild individuals to make them better.
