Pirouline

A cookie shaped like a straw with chocolate filling on the inside. On the outside it has chocolate stripes mixed with vanilla. The Pirouline reminds me of the Fruit Loop cereal straws that used to be sold in the stores but were discontinued in 2009. Similar to the cereal straws the cookie, reminds me of my childhood when I would eat the straw with milk for breakfast.

When eating Pirouline, the first bite you are able to taste the cookie before you get to the delicious chocolate filling.  I could eating several of the cookies in a sitting because of how yummy they are.

A new approach to America’ s opioid epidemic

Congress is considering setting caps on the duration of doctors  being able to prescribe opioids, so far, several states have passed the limits on the drug.  Oregon has considered a Medicaid policy forcing patients off the drug to reduce the amount of  usage.

A recent San Diego resident had died from a prescribed drug that led to an overdose. Doctors were informed of the patient’s death when local medical examiner sent a letter to 388 clinicians.  Due to the death, Clinicians that received the letter prescribed  fewer opioids than Clinicians who didn’t’.

A study in 2017 revealed 72,000 people died of drug overdose, linking two-thirds to opioids. The start of the epidemic would begin with doctors prescribing the drug resulting in the misuse and selling of the drug on the black market.

Scavenger Hunt

Looking for people on campus to interview, I decided to look in Eppley across the library. I went into the photo lab and had Krista Waite for her autograph  because it was the first objective of the assignment.

The second objective of the assignment was having a conversation about current news events. I brought up the event of the pranksters who posted their picture at McDonald’s without anyone noticing for about a month. Julio Torres who was in Eppley said, “Not a bad thing, but I rather see a company give money to a person who will care and make a difference. Not pranksters.”

Water bottle Ban

Changing the way water is packaged could affect the environment and people’s health

Plastic is used to package items everywhere in stores from food, phone cases and water bottles. According to ProCon, “ American consumed 13.7 billion of bottled water sold in 2017. 70% of those plastic water bottles are not recycled.” ProCon.org is a non profit public charity providing professionally-researched pros, cons and related information on controversial issues.

Conserve Energy Future, a website explaining 25 reasons why plastic bottles should be banned. A main reason to ban bottles is due to the polluting of the environment. As humans have become careless about recycling water bottles. Leading to the dangerous forms of carbon released into the environment.

Conserve Energy Future, monitors the potential threats of Climate change and Global Warming and how it affects people living on earth. In the About Me page, Rinkesh Kukreja, founder of the website, said the goal for the website is to educate others so that they will want to join the conservation effort.

Pawlowski from Today said, plastic bottles release harmful chemicals posing a risk to human beings. An example is when water bottles are left in cars during a hot day, the plastic releases a great amount of toxins into the water.  A toxic substance found in the plastic bottles is bisphenol A (BPA), a toxin that mimics estrogen. The outcome of heated water changes the flavor of the water, that is strongly advised not to consume.

However unlike Conserve Energy Future, a post from Bostinno, a local source covering and connecting the Boston ecosystem, producing digital media and events about entrepreneurs and topics that are shaping the present and the future of the economy. The local source explains why water bottles shouldn’t be banned on school campuses. The main reason being that the healthiest drink, water, will no longer be available to students. Without the water bottles there will be an increase of students consuming a greater amount of sugary drinks.

Lauren Landry from Bostinno is confused why schools are banning water bottles from school. When a sudden thirst hits students they won’t have the option to grab a water bottle but will be forced to choose a sugary drink.

Research done from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “considering 68.3 percent of adults ages 20 years and over are either obese or overweight.” The possibility of restricting water bottles for a better environment but banning bottles entirely would cause greater health issues.

In addition, in certain areas of the U.S tap water is not drinkable leading people to buy packages of water bottles.  In April 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan’s water supply, changed from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The Flint River contained Iron and Lead poisoning those who drank it and bathed in it. During the unfortunate disaster the state distributed free 16 oz to avoid tap water.

Iowa Highway Patrol orders to ban radar guns

Yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa, highway patrol raised concerns of troopers possibly developing cancer from longterm exposure to the radiation waves emitted by devices. The ban was ordered as a precaution while studies are conducted into the possible links between cancer and the use of such guns.

Spokesman, Adam Smith said, “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue. The whole situation is under review.” The move is considered to be the first of it’s kind by a state police agency. It comes two months after three municipal officers in Cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand-held units.
