Changing the way water is packaged could affect the environment and people’s health
Plastic is used to package items everywhere in stores from food, phone cases and water bottles. According to ProCon, “ American consumed 13.7 billion of bottled water sold in 2017. 70% of those plastic water bottles are not recycled.” ProCon.org is a non profit public charity providing professionally-researched pros, cons and related information on controversial issues.
Conserve Energy Future, a website explaining 25 reasons why plastic bottles should be banned. A main reason to ban bottles is due to the polluting of the environment. As humans have become careless about recycling water bottles. Leading to the dangerous forms of carbon released into the environment.
Conserve Energy Future, monitors the potential threats of Climate change and Global Warming and how it affects people living on earth. In the About Me page, Rinkesh Kukreja, founder of the website, said the goal for the website is to educate others so that they will want to join the conservation effort.
Pawlowski from Today said, plastic bottles release harmful chemicals posing a risk to human beings. An example is when water bottles are left in cars during a hot day, the plastic releases a great amount of toxins into the water. A toxic substance found in the plastic bottles is bisphenol A (BPA), a toxin that mimics estrogen. The outcome of heated water changes the flavor of the water, that is strongly advised not to consume.
However unlike Conserve Energy Future, a post from Bostinno, a local source covering and connecting the Boston ecosystem, producing digital media and events about entrepreneurs and topics that are shaping the present and the future of the economy. The local source explains why water bottles shouldn’t be banned on school campuses. The main reason being that the healthiest drink, water, will no longer be available to students. Without the water bottles there will be an increase of students consuming a greater amount of sugary drinks.
Lauren Landry from Bostinno is confused why schools are banning water bottles from school. When a sudden thirst hits students they won’t have the option to grab a water bottle but will be forced to choose a sugary drink.
Research done from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “considering 68.3 percent of adults ages 20 years and over are either obese or overweight.” The possibility of restricting water bottles for a better environment but banning bottles entirely would cause greater health issues.
In addition, in certain areas of the U.S tap water is not drinkable leading people to buy packages of water bottles. In April 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan’s water supply, changed from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The Flint River contained Iron and Lead poisoning those who drank it and bathed in it. During the unfortunate disaster the state distributed free 16 oz to avoid tap water.
