Relating to Durkheim

I personally relate to Durkheim’s definition of what he thinks religion is better than the other three we’ve talked about.  I like his wording of religion when he says, “Religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things…”  I take his wording of ‘sacred things’ literally like the Bible or an alter.  To me these are very sacred items in my practice of religion.  When he says ‘practices’ I refer to this like the time I was baptized or confirmed in church.  These are two very important milestones to me and my family.  I feel very familar in Durkheim’s definition of religion and maybe that’s why I relate to it so well.  I think he’s much more clear in his definition then the other three as well. I think Durkheim believed even if religion lost its importance, it still would lay the foundation of our modern society.  Durkheim states that, “Religion gave birth to all that is essential in society.”  Unlike Frazer, who I thought put religion and science on a too even of playing field, I think Durkheim puts religion up on a pedestal you could say where I think it should be.  I could make more connections with Durkheim than I could anyone else.
