Morningside Rock Star: Birth and Death of Shattered Reflection with Mike Kessel

College, the place where you can meet just about anyone, possibly your future spouse, future boss, or maybe a lead guitarist of a band. Mike, a sophomore at Morningside College, seemingly a normal teenager but. He is originally from Charter Oak, Iowa a small little city near Denison. After graduating from Charter Oaks High School, he went on to study at Morningside College, thus meeting new people and making new friends. During his first year of college, he met up with his old high school friend Chad. They decided to make a band but both were guitarists and they needed a vocalist and drummer. So where can they find people to fit the position? Well, Mike then went on a search and found Steve from Briar Cliff and Danny from Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC). He recruited both Steve, the vocalist and Danny, the drummer to form the band Shattered Reflection.
Moreover, the band recorded approximately 3 to 4 songs but never produced them as an album. The band felt that they were “still in the making” as Mike puts it, in other words they weren’t prepared and they also had many songs that still needed to be finished. According to Mike, Chad was in another band before joining Shattered Reflections and Chad’s old band recorded many songs and did cover songs. Furthermore, Chad’s band released their music to the public by uploading the visual audios through YouTube. Anyways, in their (Shattered Reflection) free time, they made many covers over popular rock music. Some of their cover songs include “Born to Loose” by Devil Wears Prada, “Five Months” by Parkway Drive, and “Vital Signs” by August Burns Red.
Unfortunately, the band did not last long they had to disband during summer of 2011 due to Mike moving back to his hometown and the other band members working full time. There is rumor that the band might start back up again, although it is not definite, as Mike has revealed the band members have not been in contact with one another since they disbanded. With one exception, Mike and Chad still keep in contact but not as often. The two are full time students at their school and with Chad working at Stream, made it harder for them to come into contact. We can always hope that the band will come back and possibly produce an album.
