Aaron Rodgers was carted off the field Monday night, tearing his achilles after just three and a half minutes of action.

The four time league MVP was making his debut in a Jets uniform, but will now miss the entire season. Jets fans had hopes that Rodgers would be the missing piece that they needed in order to win a super bowl. Now, they must rely on the hopes of young quarterback Zach Wilson.

The Jets had this to say about Rodgers’ injury, “Not the way any of us wanted it to go, but we know the commitment you’ve made to this team will continue to impact us moving forward.”

This article is news because football is the most popular sport in America. Rodgers on the Jets was something the media had by hyping up all offseason, and this injury came as a shock to many fans. I think this article does a good job of emphasizing how big of a loss this is for the Jets. I also think the article does a good job of adding context to the situation so that even if the reader is not an NFL fan, they know what is going on.

So, this might actually fit the definition of tragic. The build up to Rodgers’ debut, the hopes of Jets fans everywhere, the hubris. Then the downfall. I’m sure some will call this sad, but tragic does fit better.
