Homer the Polar Bear
December 5, 2023 | | Leave a Comment
Homer, a 16 year old Polar Bear at the Midland Zoo, was found dead in his exhibit early this morning.
He was found by zookeepers about an hour after his normal morning feeding. He was the oldest bear at the Midland Zoo. Zoo veterinarian Dr. Shanda Lear had this to say about Homer’s death, “We will perform a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death.”
Zoo director Chris Bacon added this, “We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died.”
It’s safe to say that the Zoo is doing everything in their power to find out the cause of death for Homer, who was the oldest Polar Bear they had. The Zoo has had two other animals die in the past three weeks, but say that the deaths have been unrelated. The two other polar bears, ages 9 and 10, have been removed from the exhibit and are being monitored by veterinary staff.

Morningside Website Analysis
December 5, 2023 | | Leave a Comment
Morningside has recently partnered with Rize Education, in hopes of providing students with a positive return on their investment in education.
This article talks about the opportunities that this partnership is providing for Morningside students. They will be provided opportunities in fields such as cybersecurity, public health, and supply chain management. This partnership will hopefully allow Morningside students to get ahead of their competition in these respective fields.
I believe that this story makes Morningside look advanced in their education. It is giving students great opportunities in fields that many other colleges do not offer. It gives students opportunities to get ahead of their competition, which parents will also be very pleased about.

A Gambling Wave has Taken Over the Sports World- Final
December 4, 2023 | | Leave a Comment
Sports betting has recently been popularized, and has changed the sporting experience as a whole.
Betting on both college and professional sporting events has been going on for a long time, mostly “under the books” so to speak. In 2018, the Supreme Court passed a law that allowed each state to create their own sports gambling laws. Some states legalized all forms of betting, some only allowed casino betting, and some only allowed online betting.
The online form of betting has become particularly popular. Websites like Fanduel, Draftkings, and BetMGM are some examples of online forms of betting. They allow anyone over the age of 21 to place bets on all sporting events at the click of a button.
For many, its just a fun hobby that makes the games more interesting to watch. For others, its a lifestyle and things can turn bad in a hurry. Some people become so addicted to betting that they take out loans to place bets that they can’t afford. This is part of the reason why this topic is so controversial. Some argue that it helps the economy and some argue that it hurts it.
Justin Sitti, who is new to the betting world, had this to say on his experience. “I just turned 21 and have only been betting for about a month. I don’t put much money on the games, but I also can see why some people do. That feeling when you hit a bet is honestly pretty addictive.”
Sports betting’s main audience is the casual fan who is looking to enhance their game watching experience, but there are many cases of athletes getting caught gambling on games. This has happened both on the college level as well as professional level.
Iowa and Iowa State University athletes have made national headlines because of student athletes wagering money on games. Athletes allegedly used accounts on online sports books that were under the names of their friends or family. This violates the NCAA rules, and all athletes that were under investigation were either suspended or kicked off the team.
Many believe that this is happening everywhere, and Iowa and Iowa State were just the first to get caught. Iowa head coach Brian Ferentz told Sports Illustrated that, “We’re the lucky ones”, referring to his athletes getting caught gambling.
Former Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers admitted to wagering around $2,700 on events, including ones that he played in. Some sources have said that the actual number is near $50,000, but either way there is clearly a problem here. The whole online sports betting landscape is very enticing for these student athletes. “I think its happens on every team in America, and NIL money definitely isn’t helping this problem,” said Landon Graver, an assistant basketball coach at Morningside.
The NFL has also cracked down on its players gambling on events. Former Atlanta Falcons player Calvin Ridley was suspended an entire year for betting on games. Many were confused why he was punished so harshly for betting, when the NFL as a whole promotes various forms of betting. The NFL also caught flack for punishing Ridley like that while they let some guys get sexual assault charges and they only get one game suspensions.
When asked about this sports betting phenomenon, Ethan Alfers said, “I understand the harsh punishments for the college kids, but I don’t think NFL players should get punished.”

Princess Cruises Adds New Largest Casino on Sun Princess
November 30, 2023 | | Leave a Comment
This article is about how the company “Princess Cruises” just added its largest casino yet. The Sun Princess will hold up to 4,300 guests, and has 50% more space and 30% more machines than previous ships.
This article goes more in depth on the details of the ship. It describes the amount of each machine, the placement of machines, and overall layout. The specific description is similar to the news articles that we have been looking at and writing in class. However, the way the article is written is a little different. It has longer paragaphs, and also has a list of bullet points within the article.
Bullet points are something I haven’t come across yet this year among all the articles I’ve read. Another way this article is different is that at the very end, theres another paragraph that says “about princess cruises”. This is just a long paragraph describing what Princess Cruises is and what they do.

Thomas, the Tolerant Trumpet Player
November 21, 2023 | | 1 Comment
Thomas Godtland is a trumpet player at the band here at Morningside University.
Gotdland used the word tolerant to describe himself because of what he has to put up with every day with his fellow trumpet players. Thomas said that the other two trumpet players are not up to standard. They are constantly off beat and missing notes, and it takes a lot to have to deal with this day in and day out.
Although he does not have anything against them personally, he wishes they were better trumpet players. Thomas said to me in our conversation, “Why are you even in college to do this”, referring to his fellow band mates.
His fellow trumpet players are both underclassmen, so he has hopes that they will improve their skills by the end of their time here at Morningside.

“Bean-Boozled” Description
November 16, 2023 | | 1 Comment
As I bit into the small, pebble like, sugar filled bean, I felt a sense of anxiety rush over me. I had just popped a “Bean-Boozled” jellybean into my mouth, which means I was about to get a delicious taste in my mouth, or the exact opposite. Luckily, my mouth was filled with a juicy, bubblegum-like taste. The flavor bursted onto my tastebuds like a piece of juicy-fruit gum. Unfortunately, the flavor was gone in a matter of seconds. Overall, my experience with this bean was very average. I would greatly prefer any other sugary snack over this “Bean-Boozled” jellybean, and do not plan on eating one again.

Our first story tonight covers how marine biologists are helping our endangered coral reefs stay alive.
Methods such as using fake fog, “re-skinning”, and “sea-weeding” are all helping our coral reefs survive.
Erin Muller, a marine biologist, says that things such as extreme heat, hurricanes, and infectious diseases have all led to the coral reefs being destroyed. All over the planet, our reefs are taking massive hits.
Muller says, “We’ve lost 98 percent of our living coral cover.” She added that reefs across the globe including near Florida, Australia, and the Caribbean are being affected.
Sea weeding is one way in which marine biologists are attempting to save the reefs. By doing so, the spreading of bacteria can be prevented. “re-skinning” is when small bits of coral are grown in a lab and transported onto reef skeletons, which brings dead ecosystems back to life. Fake fog is used to create shade for the reefs, reducing stress on them and in turn promoting growth.

Our next story is on the Men’s soccer GPAC championship game.
The Morningside Mustangs took on the Northwestern Red Raiders in the 2023 GPAC title game. It was a cold night in Orange City, but that did not stop the players from putting on a show.
Possession was back and forth for the first 40 minutes of action, until the Raiders struck first. In the 44th minute of action, Northwestern’s Gerrard Uamai found the back of the net. The Raiders took this momentum into the second half, where the raiders netted one again in the 74th minute.
The Mustangs battled back, with Carlo Schmidt scoring in the 76th minute. The comeback fell just short, and the final score was 2-1 with the Red Raiders hoisting the championship trophy.
Junior Mustang forward Levi Von Hagen has this to say on the match, INSERT QUOTE HERE

Successful Basketball Coach Bob Knight Dies at 83. News Comment #9
November 1, 2023 | | 1 Comment
Bob Knight, one of the most well known and successful college basketball coaches of all time, passed away at age 83.
Knight is most known for bringing Indiana University to the top of the men’s basketball scene throughout the 70’s and 80’s. He is also known for his temper on the sidelines, which is one of the reasons why he became so popular. Hoosier fans loved him and hated him for the way he acted, but one thing he did was win.
In the seasons of 1974-1975 and 1975-1976, Indiana won 63 of 64. Knight won three national titles during his 29 seasons at Indiana.
Knight was nicknamed “college basketball’s raging bull” by broadcaster Bob Costas. This was mainly for his antics on the sidelines as well as his relationship with the media. He frequently got into it with reporters who he thought weren’t doing their jobs correctly. His foul language also contributed to this nickname.
