President Joe Biden announced that he is cancelling $9 billion in student loan debts. This move comes right as repayments started up again after a three year pause.

This will benefit a little over 125,000 people that qualify, including public service workers and people on permanent disability. The two main public service workers being affected are teachers and firefighters.

This move by Biden comes after his original plan was rejected by the Supreme Court. This plan would have forgiven more than $400 billion in student debt, and is a move that would have raised a lot of controversy. This is not Biden’s first time forgiving student loan debt, in fact the total forgiven is up to $127 billion and has affected almost 3.6 million Americans.

I believe this is news because there are millions of Americans who struggle with student loan debt. Not all qualify for forgiveness but the ones that have are getting a huge advantage. I did not like how this article was written, I feel like they did not explain the situation fully until almost the last paragraph. It seemed like the author expected the reader to know a lot about this whole situation, but I feel like a lot of people don’t. I think if the author used the reverse pyramid technique better the article would have flowed better and made much more sense.

The organization focuses on the newest events, then back tracks a bit, then goes into explanation. There is some assumption that readers have been following the issue from the beginning.

    Good critical comment.
