Scavenger Hunt

September 21, 2021 · 1 Comment

During my scavenger hunt I had to go out and find something with a Morningside logo on it and also have a conversation with a stranger about their favorite movie.

I went to Dimmit hall which are dorms here at Morningside and the first person I saw in the dorms I stopped them and asked them if I could have a conversation about their favorite movie. Her name was Bridget Smith and she is on the volleyball team I got to know during our conversation.

” My favorite movie is Whitehouse Down” Bridget explained and then she went on again to say “it’s my favorite movie because it is very interesting and has a lot of action.” I have never seen Whitehouse Down but I will watch it at some point now.

When it came to the thing with the Morningside logo on it I went to the Rosen Verdorn Sports Center. I went up to the coahes offices and got mail form that the mens basketball team sends out to fans to join the Mustang Stampede. The Mustang Stampede is a flyer they send out every month which a pamflet and comes which a shirt and all the inside stuff to Mustang basketball.

Next Friday, The United States and Europe will be facing off in the Ryder Cup. The Europeans have won the last 9 out of 12 meetings. After reading this article on Espn it looks like tension is building up for the United states especially two players Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Kopkea. Fomrer players and captians of this event for the United States explained how this tournament has brought the players closer together and they build relationships for a lifetime from this tournament. I guess we will see how this pans out once the tournament gets going next Friday, but everyone on this United States team has high egos and that might hurt them this coming week and have them losing to the Europeans once again.

Omaha Nebraska native killed in suicide bombing at Kabhul Airport: News Comment 2

September 9, 2021 · No Comments

Being from Omaha Nebraska this story hits close to home. I was saddened to hear this news and mourned for the families affected by the suicide bombing that took place at Kabhul airport. Daegen Page was a true patriot and a hero in my own eyes and served his country with honor and dignity. After reading this article on USA today website, I thought they really did a really good job on telling the whole story of Daegen where they talked about his whole life, where he grew up, where he went to highschool, what his hobbies are, and what he loved about the military, and much more. I hope the families get the honored funerals they deserve and hope they get peace from what this country is doing wrong right now.

Sioux City to ban hand-held radar guns

September 9, 2021 · No Comments

Yesterday, the East Dakota Highway patrol banded hand-held radar guns, because of concern with radar guns leads to signs of cancer from radiation waves.

The ban is in tack until the studies come back with the connections between radar guns and cancer. With banning these radar guns, the highway patrol will take away 70 radar guns, and instead go on to use radar units with transmitters outside of the patrols cruisers.

The Highway patrol is going on with this ban because the officers want to steer on the side of caution more than putting their lives at risk, until they know more.

Fiji fraternities across the midwest getting called out: News comment 1

September 2, 2021 · No Comments

This article comes from the Little Village Iowa City/Cedar Rapids news, written by Adria Carpenter. The last couple of weeks the Fiji Fraternity both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Iowa have had some controversial news coming from there respected frats over the last two weeks. The first reports from what I have heard of is that a 19 year old sophomore in the Fiji fraternity from the University of Nebraska on a Tuesday night during the first week of classes, brutally sexually assaulted a 17 year old freshman during a house party they were having that night. She was found on the lawn by another classmate bleeding and crying, then soon after was rushed to a near by hospital in Lincoln. After the whole school hearing about this incident started to protest outside the student union office and the Fiji house asking the school to ban the frat for good, and kicking out all members from the school. The student body of the school have started a petition online to get people to sign to get the fraternity banned and so far has over 500,000 signatures and still rising.

Moving onto the other fraternity getting a lot of heat to its name was the Fiji fraternity from the University of Iowa. These past couple of days Fiji at U of I have gotten the same heat as UNL, but this time these accusations are coming from last year, when two members of the chapter were accused of both sexually assaulting two young ladies and there is video proof of it and no action has been made by the university. The last couple of days the protests have gotten out of hand per say at the university. The protestors have started to spray paint words onto the the fraternities house, then proceeded to take more violent actions to the house. They started to break the entry level windows, people crawled through the windows and started to steal a bunch of tvs, windows, and much more. The guys who still lived in the house called the police but the police proceded to tell them they weren’t coming so they had to climb out the back windows to get away, because they were scared of their lives.

I really loved the way the students at the University of Nebraska the situation with the peaceful protests that they put on and didn’t put anyone lives in danger and did it in the right way and acted like how adults in college should act. The way the students at U of I handled the situation should not be acceptable by the university because it put kids lives in danger and most of them should have not have to go through a situation like that while still in college, but I hope the girls who went through this mess get some clarity and get what they deserve because no 17 and 18 year old girls should have to go through something like that as well.

1 on 1: With Tyler Strauss

August 31, 2021 · No Comments

Today I had the pleasure to sit down with Tyler Strauss and ask him about his life. We will first start out with Tyler and his family. Tyler is the oldest of 8 siblings, but they aren’t full siblings they are all half siblings! At his home in Fort Calhoun Nebraska where he grew up, he had zero pets which is something I could never do, but he wants to have a dog or two when he gets older. He briefly spoke about what his mom does for a living, and what she does is she owns her own transportation business back in Nebraska. Tyler went to Fort Calhoun, but he said he basically grew up in Omaha Nebraska not Fort Calhoun which is about 10 minutes outside of Omaha.

The next thing we talked discussed during our time together was what he plays here at Morningside. Tyler does indeed play football at Morningside, and he is a sophomore wide receiver and played jv and varsity for the mustangs last year on a Morningside team that was undefeated last year until losing to Northwestern in the semifinals. I also asked Tyler what his favorite game he was apart of during last year, and he responded with ” I loved the first game of the year, which was the night game versus Northwestern. I thought the energy in the stadium and how close the game was closer during the whole game was awesome.” I also had to ask him what his favorite college football team, and his favorite team is that he is a big time Nebraska football fan. I must add he has never had a serious injury while playing football.

Now in the second half of the interview we talked a little bit about what his dreams and what he wants to do when he is older. First I asked him where his dream vacation spot that he can travel too when he’s older, and that spot would be the island of Fiji. Tyler goes on to explain that he wants to go there some day because he always loved going to the ocean and beaches when he was little. Then we would go on to talk about what his dream job would be. When he graduates college he wants to do something with his business administration major and a minor in marketing, and with that he wants to own his own business one day. Tyler also goes on and says that with his business he wants one day, he wants it to be in Omaha rather than Sioux City.

After talking with Tyler for awhile and getting to know him and a little bit more about him now. Tyler is a stand up guy and is a very funny and a smart young human, and I hope you all enjoy this piece.
