Broadcasting Story Final

Our first comes to you from Des Moines Iowa where an Iowa man has been charged with a hate crime after police say he tore down and burned an LGBTQ flag hanging outside a bar in Des Moines. 32-year-old Daniel Rosemark was arrested after the early Wednesday morning incident.

I asked senior nursing student Tatum Heath how she feels about a crime like this happening in Iowa.”A a Student at Morningside I would feel threatened and feel that we couldn’t express ourselves freely on campus ” A similar crime occurred in Ames when a man was arrested for taking a pride flag from a church and burning it.

Students are hoping similar crimes will not occur at Morningside.

For our next story we take a look into the world of science and technology.

Imagine rats moving around the streets of New York in their own tiny cars.

Scientists have worked with lab rats, teaching them to steer and drive custom made cars.

The rats learned to do this through both trial and error and were rewarded with cereal for successful results. Videos of the rats accomplishing these tasks were released and the rats were able to make some pretty good turns and maneuvers.

Most people may assume that rats aren’t very intelligent creatures, this research may indicate that rats are much smarter than people perceive them to be.

I asked Sterling Stecker what his opinion on rats were and then showed them the videos, here’s what he said. “Rats can drive cars now? No way man! I think thats incredible really like how can rats know how to drive cars like we do they are way smarter than I thought”

The world of science never ceases to amaze us.

For our final story, a six-year old boy brought a loaded gun to his Ohio school.

The student was caught after telling a classmate about the gun, which was hidden in his backpack. The gun was apparently the boy’s grandfathers.

Gun control has been a highly debated topic among students of all forms of education. Morningside students seemed to have differing opinions on the subject. We asked Morningside student Ben Hieb what they thought of the story and the issue of gun control in general. “How can a six-year old boy walk into class with a gun. Something needs to be done with gun control. That’s so scary wow!”

Whether for or against, it seems gun control and the dangers of guns will be a prominent topic and issue in our modern times.

Thank you for listening tune in again tomorrow night at 6 central time.

Final Story

Sterling Stecker is always down for almost anything, he accepts almost every opportunity he is given. He’s a tall lanky guy with brownish blonde hair and he’s known for always having a smile on his face. Sterling see’s every new opportunity as an adventure and once snuck onto a tubing hill in the middle of the night to sled with some random people. “It was a fun night, but it was also super dangerous.” Sterling said excitedly. “We couldn’t see anything so if you hit a bump you would go flying and get a nasty bruise or cut.” He said they had to leave after about an hour because they saw lights and thought it might be police officers.”As soon as we saw lights, we sledded down the hill as fast as we could to try and get to our cars! We thought we heard someone yelling at us but we didn’t stay behind to see if anyone actually was!” Sterling said laughing as he finished telling the story.

Sterling is from a small town in Iowa called Forrest City, which is close to Minnesota. Forrest City is known for a Winnebago camper plant and they even have a big festival of campers every year.”One of my friends asked to help volunteer at the festival and I was down because I would always meet people from all over the country and get a free shirt!” Sterling said this while he was wearing a Winnebago camper shirt. The town itself isn’t very big, Sterling said he, “grew up in a small town culture with not much to do for fun.” He ended up always looking for an adventure. He said, “I didn’t really do much besides climb trees. Anytime anyone asked me to go and do something I’d always be down!” Sterling said. He still loves climbing trees to this day and has been known to climb quite a lot of trees on campus. He says he really opened up in college and would’ve even called himself an introvert in high school. “Compared to most people, I would say Sterling wasn’t an introvert at all! I can’t believe he said that!” Was the response Sterling’s High school Friend Naddie Meyers gave when I told her about my profile on Sterling. “He’s kind of eccentric I guess, like I always see him climbing trees or hear about him doing something crazy!” She said smiling. Naddie, like everyone that knows Sterling, know Sterling’s sense of adventure can get him into some crazy situations. During High School he participated in several musicals and loved to dance. This is more evidence that he loves to try new things and get out of his comfort zone. Right before college, Sterling decided to spend a summer in Minneapolis.

“My relative offered me a place to stay in Minneapolis if I wanted, and of course I said yes!” Sterling told me this when I asked him why’d he go in the first place. In Minneapolis, he acquired an assistant manager job at a very busy Pizza Hut right in the city. “I was never thinking that I wouldn’t get the job, I just applied and went to the interview full of confidence even though I know not many people at my age can get a job like this.” This job helped Sterling to gain leadership skills and learn some interesting social skills. “Being the boss of people older than me was really challenging, but it really helped me gain confidence!” He began a new hobby in his off-time in Minneapolis. “I wanted to learn how to make things with my hands so I just started reading a lot of books on electronics and coding.” Sterling said grinning. Sterling said began tinkering with different electronic kits and also bought several coding books in an effort to learn some useful new skills. He created different interesting gadgets and also coded several simple programs and templates. “I actually created a device that shuts down wifi networks, don’t tell anyone but I was experimenting with it one time and shut down a big wifi network for about 15 minutes! It was super funny but also kind of scary because I wasn’t sure what to do!” Sterling said this in between lots of laughter. Sterling named this period of his life as a really crucial time in his development. “Being away from my small hometown was super refreshing, I loved being able to spread the wings a little bit!” Sterling said he had already decided to come to Morningside at this point in his life and that he was “excited to begin his college career,” as soon as he got back from summer vacation.

He found his way to Morningside through several campus visits and really liked the atmosphere. Sterling said he thinks Morningside is the “perfect place for him because it’s located in a city where I get anything I need and there are plenty of people to make friends with.” His high school friend Naddie also came to the same school as him and had this to say about what Sterling is like in college, “Sterling is very outgoing and active at Morningside. I think he is the most involved person I know and I really think he’s made some positive changes on campus.” He said he thought about doing sports to keep busy, but didn’t think he could compete at the collegiate level. So rather than “sit around and do nothing,” as he stated, he decided to help the college and student body anyway he could. He said, “When I first got on campus I didn’t think there were any fun events to go to or participate in.” With the lack of events available to him, he said he decided to attend a MAC meeting in order to provide his own insight and to help get more activities on campus. Sterling said he liked the experience so much he decided to join the council. “I’m actually the public relations officer now so I always create the ads for all the events that go on around campus!” This helped jumpstart Sterling’s passion to help Morningside,

Sterling is involved in almost every organization Morningside has to offer. “Once I joined MAC I decided to look around at what other organizations are on campus. I joined E-group, Active Minds, Student Government, the rocket club, and some other ones!” Sterling said with a look of pride on his face. Sterling continued on, “I like to make sure I can help the college and students any way I can, but I can’t lie. Being so involved is a whole lot of fun.” Another member of the rocket club Skyler Briggs had this to say about Sterling, “He’s an awesome guy to be around, at every meeting he always adds great insight and stays around afterwards to help get things done. One time a rocket we launched caught his pants on fire and the dude took it like a champ!” Sterling is always around to help anyone and loves to do crazy adventures. He is a very interesting guy and if you see him around campus, he’s sure to say hello to you!

Mall Explosion: from the perspective of someone who was there

Clarence was working his 9-5 at Frisky Creme Donuts at the MCM mall when at approximately 9:53 am, after selling a donut to his regular customer MikeI, they heard a very loud bang. They ran out of the the store and saw smoke and debris everywhere.

They ran into a nurse named Alex who just got done with his night shift and was shopping for his mom. Our news station asked him what happened and he told us, “I was in the food court on my way to look for a Christmas present for my mom when there was a big flash and then I was on the ground.”

Clarence said he tried to help as many people as he could when he eventually ran into an off-duty electrician who said “The explosion may have been the result of an electrical problem from faulty lighting.” Whatever the cause, this was a terrifying experience for all caused.

After everything died down, we attended a police press conference to learn more about the situation. “We don’t know if the explosion was intentional or some kind of electrical problem. We are going with accidental until we find proof otherwise.” the police officer was quoted as saying this. There were over 100 injuries and 2 fatalities

When asked for a quote the MCM mall had this to say, “Our Sympathy goes out to all the families impacted by today’s events. We will work closely with authorities to find the answers and insure that MCM remains a safe place for our customers and associates.

Homer the Polar Bear Sadly Passed Away this Morning

We regret to say that Homer our beloved 16 year old polar bear passed away this morning.

Homer was a very curious and playful polar bear and we will miss him terribly. His death is being investigated to determine the cause. Homer will always be remembered for the smiles and joy he brought to all our visitors and we will do everything we can to ensure that our zoo is a safe environment for all of our animals.

The safety of our animals is of top priority and measure will be taken to make sure that all animals are in a safe loving environment.

News story:

Beloved Polar Bear Homer passes away at questionably safe zoo

Homer, a beloved polar bear at the zoo, passed away under strange circumstances. He was found floating in the enclosures pool an hour after his feeding. Homer isn’t the first animal to die this month. Two other animals died while in the care of the zoo.

Kenya the giraffe got her neck stuck into its enclosure and a ten year old bobcat also died of renal failure. The zoo is quoted as saying that safety is its number one priority, but is that really the truth?

Council subjecting vaping products to Omaha tobacco tax

The Omaha city council voted to implement a 3% tax on vape products for the city in order to help build a new cancer center at the university of Nebraska Medical Center. The tax may help in deterring young people from even starting vaping. Vape product sellers warned that the tax may drive people from buying in Omaha and resorting to online purchasing and going out of city limits.

I think this is relevant because a lot of student at Morningside use vape products. If Sioux City follows suit with a similar tax this could affect many students. I think the story is short and to the point, with an ok lead. I think that the story is not that entertaining but very informative and essential.

A cold walk to class

The last conversation I had was right before I got to this class with my friends Riley Collins and Anna Uehling. Riley is very tall with brown hair and green eyes and was wearing a dark brown Air Jordan sweatshirt with black sweat pants. Anna was wearing a light blue and white winter coat, is pale like a ghost, and has blondish brown hair. We left our first class and headed into the cold, on our way to Journalism class.

We began walking from our last class discussing how it was dumb that we were kept in class later than usual. None of us were feeling like going to class and discussed if attending would even be worth it. Of course, we then dismissed this idea when Anna brought up the fact that we were almost done with the semester anyway and should just tough it out.

Anna then said I was a bad influence on Riley which I categorically denied. We noted seeing a large group of high school students outside of the library and headed in to our Journalism class.

Riley Collins, Simple yet Entertaining

“Travis Scott is a god among men.” exclaimed Riley when he was asked about who he looked up to most. He said the first time he ever listened to his music he “transcended reality” and “hasn’t been the same since”. Riley may have been saying things this way to make a more entertaining story, but these statements show who he is as a person.

Riley Collins can turn a dull conversation, into a humorous and entertaining experience in an instant. He likes to play video games and listen to music. These simple questions were answered in a very entertaining and humorous way. Along with his hobbies, Riley is very passionate about sports as he is on the Morningside Football team.

Riley grew up in Sioux City and wanted to continue to contribute to the city by staying close for college while simultaneously saving money by doing so. As for what he wants to do in the future, he isn’t too sure yet.
