Following Hamas’s unexpected assault on Israel, the largest and most devastating in many years, Israel is preparing for a potentially prolonged incursion into the Gaza Strip. Israel has issued a warning about the upcoming extended conflict, and concerns are growing about the humanitarian crisis within Gaza as Israeli retaliatory attacks relentlessly target residences and other structures in the area.
On Saturday, Hamas, the militant organization in control of Gaza, launched a multitude of rockets into Israel and dispatched numerous fighters across the border to assault military bases and infiltrate southern Israeli towns. These fighters unleashed gunfire, set ablaze houses, and took individuals hostage. The Israeli military was caught off guard by this relatively low-tech ground invasion.
Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007 and has engaged in four wars against Israel since gaining power. Following the attack on Saturday, Hamas attributed it to an unspecified Israeli “desecration” of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This mosque is situated on a site known as the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims and the Temple Mount to Jews. It holds immense religious significance for Jews, is among the holiest sites for Muslims, and has been the subject of numerous conflicts throughout history.
