It\u2019s had a long-lasting\nimpact for many people worldwide and here in Sioux City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\nSunday, members of the Congregation Beth Shalom, a Jewish community in Sioux\nCity, displayed exhibits for Genocide Awareness Day to remember the impact\ngenocide had on different ethnic, racial, and religious groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote\nspeaker and Director of the Native American Student Services at the University\nof South Dakota, Marisa Cummings, spoke about historical genocides in Native\nAmerican populations and the impact it may have on future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;She says, \u201cGenocide is a practice to eliminate\na group of people, any population can be targeted to genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cummings\nshared her own experiences and how she is passing down her heritage and\ncultural norms to her own daughter and family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nthink it&#8217;s important to talk about genocide and how it relates to our climate\ntoday, how we interact with one another, how we target certain populations of\npeople and dehumanize them,\u201d explained Cummings. \u201cIt can be very dangerous and it can result in very dangerous\nthings happening like genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibit also displayed organizations that promote world\npeace, economic and social stability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Cynthia Monroy&#8211;Bryce Winters, a student majoring in Nursing at Morningside, made an exhibit on Indians of the Amazon and the genocide the group encountered up until 1998. &nbsp;\u201cEvery group has their own issues that need to be resolved,\u201d Winters said.
