{"id":9920,"date":"2019-03-22T11:28:14","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T16:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=9920"},"modified":"2019-03-22T11:28:14","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T16:28:14","slug":"its-not-all-black-white-portrait-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/9920","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;It&#8217;s Not All Black &amp; White,&#8221; Portrait Photography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Tracie Tuttle&#8211;<\/strong>A recent art display, titled \u201cIt\u2019s\nNot All Black and White,\u201d at the HJF Learning Center featured portrait\nphotography by Rae Clinkenbeard and Makaelyn Glienke which forces viewers to\nlook beyond what they see. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show featured 28 contrasting\nphotos that allowed the photographers to get out of their comfort zones and\nexplore new techniques, ranging from extremely dark backgrounds that focused on\nthe silhouette of the model to bold, colorful portraits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinkenbeard, a junior arts\nadministration and photography major, said that this show allowed her to gain\nexperience in working with models and playing with different kinds of light\nsources. In her previous work, she focused on taking very bright and colorful\nphotos of landscapes, animals, grass\u2013 almost everything nature related.\n\u201cWorking in a studio with people is different. I don\u2019t have to pose nature and\nthe models talk back,\u201d said Clinkenbeard when asked about her experience taking\nthese photos. She went on to say that she was inspired by the 17<sup>th<\/sup>\nCentury Dutch painter Rembrandt, who is known for depicting very deliberate and\nintense lighting in his paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glienke, a junior advertising and\nphotography major, was inspired by photographer John Sams, who utilizes\ninteresting poses and bold, monochromatic color choices in most of his\nphotography. \u201cWhen I started taking photos, I stayed mainly with sports and\nnature as my subjects.
