{"id":9755,"date":"2019-02-08T12:02:41","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T17:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=9755"},"modified":"2019-02-08T16:58:04","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T21:58:04","slug":"sigma-tau-deltas-common-read-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/9755","title":{"rendered":"Sigma Tau Delta&#8217;s Common Read a Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Lindsey Smith&#8211;<\/strong>Members of <a href=\"https:\/\/my.morningside.edu\/academics\/english\/activities\/sigma_tau_delta\/\">Sigma Tau Delta<\/a>, an English Honor Society on campus, met to discuss the annual common read book, Tess Taylor\u2019s <em>Work and Days <\/em>with a general consensus: this is good poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.englishconvention.org\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TessTaylor-WorkandDays.png\" alt=\"Image result for tess taylor's work and days\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students had a mixed\nreaction to the book as a whole but most agreed, it\u2019s lyrically and visually\nstunning to read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abby Maldonado Salguero,\na member of Sigma Tau Delta, says of the book, \u201cIt was an interesting read and\nI enjoyed it very much.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Work\nand Days<\/em>, published in 2016, is a collection of poetry that\ncelebrates the beauty and simplicity of nature against a backdrop of social\nproblems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it was mentioned\nduring the common read discussion by Professors Leslie Werden and Christina\nTriezenberg, the final portion of the book may even address some of Taylor\u2019s\nstruggle with conceiving a child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, Sigma Tau\nDelta chooses a book for all of its chapters to read and discuss. In the past,\nthe books have dealt with a range of issues from immigration to racial issues\nto poetry. The idea behind this project is to spark a discussion and expose readers\nto literature they might not pick normally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christina Triezenberg,\nFaculty Adviser to Sigma Tau Delta, says of the event, \u201cThis is the second year that our chapter has held an\nevent focused on Sigma Tau Delta&#8217;s annual Common Read selection, and like our\ninaugural event last year, it was a really wonderful experience.&nbsp; Though\nall of our members have busy schedules, it was really fun for us to be able to\ngather together on a chilly winter&#8217;s day to talk about poetry&#8211;and, for those\nof us who will be attending STD\u2019s annual conference in March, having a chance\nto discuss this year&#8217;s CR text certainly whet our appetites to hear Tess\nTaylor, the author of Work and Days, speak about her work!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sigma Tau Delta, while a\nsmall group on Morningside\u2019s campus, is actively working to bring students to\nthe annual Sigma Tau Delta conference in St. Louis Missouri. They are currently\nraising money through soup and chocolate sales. The next soup and chocolate sale\nwill be February 20<sup>th<\/sup> from 11-1 in the Lewis Hall lobby.
