Due to expected dangerous sub-zero temperatures and wind chills, many local schools have announced class cancellations for Wednesday; including Morningside College.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9702\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366-200x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366-200x147.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366-400x295.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2019\/01\/christmas-cold-frost-279366-800x590.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With frigid temperatures, there are many risk factors for students walking from resident dorms to campus or even if you\u2019re heading outdoors for work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety precautions to keep in mind:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid being outdoors for long periods of time, excessive cold exposure to the skin can cause frostbite.<\/li>\n<li>Buddle up! Dress in warm layers by covering your ears, hands, and feet.<\/li>\n<li>In case you head outdoors, carry emergency supplies or warm clothing\/blankets in your car.<\/li>\n<li>Minimize the risk of wet clothing when outdoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brett Lyon, Director of Campus Safety and Security, advises students to stay indoors due to the risks of the forecasted weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re expecting wind chills below negative 40 and 50, so if you do need to go outside bundle up because you can get frostbite in a matter of minutes or worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lyon says the ultimate goal by canceling classes and closing offices at Morningside College are to make sure everyone is safe both on and off campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay home, if you do not need to go outside don\u2019t, stay put tonight and tomorrow morning,\u201d said Lyon.<\/p>\n<p>While classes will resume on Thursday, January 31<sup>st<\/sup>, there are several on-campus events that will be rescheduled due to Wednesday\u2019s cold temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan on entering the Student Art Show the deadline will be extended to January 31<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The LifeServe Blood Center staff will not be meeting in the Yockey Room today and will be moved to a later date.<\/p>\n<p>The Sigma Tau Delta Soup Sale is canceled and will be moved to a later date in February.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you want to join an interesting discussion stop by the Hickman Dining room for the \u201cFood for Thought\u201d meeting on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Iowa\u2019s extremely cold weather, make sure to stay warm and keep studying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Cynthia Monroy&#8211;You bet it\u2019s starting to feel like winter outside!
