{"id":8991,"date":"2017-12-04T16:51:52","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T21:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=8991"},"modified":"2017-12-04T16:51:52","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T21:51:52","slug":"sigma-tau-delta-inducts-new-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/8991","title":{"rendered":"Sigma Tau Delta Inducts New Members"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8993\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8993\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/MartyK-200x259.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Marty Knepper\" width=\"200\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/MartyK-200x259.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/MartyK.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Marty Knepper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>by Rachael Arnts&#8211;<\/strong>On Wednesday evening (Nov. 30) ten Morningside students were inducted into the Morningside chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta (STD) English Honor Society.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for the honor society, the students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of upper level English courses with an average 3.0 GPA.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s inductees were Allison Agee, Kristen Brown, Amy Carothers, Mattie Carstens, Zachary Hutchison, Tyler Nordstrom, Abby Maldonado Salguero, Lindsey Smith, Christina Vazquez and Noah Wieseler.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being an accomplishment that the inductees could put on their resume\u2019s, students joined simply for their love of the English department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to join STD because I feel like the society is one big family and I would find meaningful connections with other people who appreciate English like I do,\u201d said Lindsey Smith. \u201cI hope to learn a lot from my fellow members and to become more involved in the community through STD.<\/p>\n<p>Mattie Carstens joined for similar reasons. \u201cI joined STD because I love literature and believe in supporting those who want to create more literature,\u201d stated Carstens. \u201cI want to have a safe place to go to share my works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/STDpic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8992\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/STDpic-200x81.jpg\" alt=\"STDpic\" width=\"200\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/STDpic-200x81.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/STDpic-400x161.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/12\/STDpic.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The evening began with a meal prepared by STD officers. Marty Knepper served as the guest speaker for the evening. Knepper\u2019s speech was proceeded by STD officers initiating the new members. Senior officer Ellie Freebern was recognized as well for graduating in December and heading off to medical school in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marty Knepper Returns<br \/>\n<\/strong>Recently retired Morningside English Professor, Marty Knepper was the guest speaker for the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Students were very excited to see Knepper on campus again. \u201cI thought it was great that Marty was invited to speak,\u201d commented Smith. \u201cI feel like she brings a lot of energy to a room whenever she speaks and I\u2019ve really missed her here on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carstens enthusiastically added, \u201cIt was incredible having Marty back! Being able to see and talk to her was the highlight of my week!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knepper delivered a speech that stressed the importance of writing and how it can benefit our lives. \u00a0She emphasized two main points for the new and current STD members to consider. The first was to keep a journal about their transitions from college to the workforce. The second point was to talk to peers that are a few years older and ask them how they ended up with their current job position.<\/p>\n<p>Knepper was also presented with the Meritorious Service Award for her continued devotion to students after retirement. \u201cI\u2019m just about out of wall hanging space!\u201d exclaimed Knepper as she accepted her surprise award.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all who were honored at the Sigma Tau Delta ceremony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Rachael Arnts&#8211;On Wednesday evening (Nov. 30) ten Morningside students were inducted into the Morningside chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta (STD) English Honor Society.
