{"id":8722,"date":"2017-05-02T15:29:16","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T20:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=8722"},"modified":"2019-11-14T14:04:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T19:04:38","slug":"chainsmokers-memories-do-not-open-isnt-just-a-title-its-a-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/8722","title":{"rendered":"Chainsmokers\u2019 &#8220;Memories\u2026 Do Not Open&#8221; Isn\u2019t Just a Title, It\u2019s a Warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(05.02.2017) By Jared Martin<\/strong> &#8212;&nbsp;In just three short years, The Chainsmokers have gone from complete obscurity to one of the world\u2019s most popular music acts.<\/p>\n<p>Riding high after dominating the charts with their single \u201cCloser,\u201d the producer-singer duo have released their debut album, <em>Memories\u2026 Do Not Open<\/em>, a collection of twelve songs with, in my opinion, boring piano based-production, awful singing courtesy of Drew Taggart, and lyrics that come off as whiny and privileged.<\/p>\n<p>The first three tracks of the album star Taggart as the vocalist, and while he seems to have improved marginally since \u201cCloser,\u201d he still sounds like an amateur karaoke singer, not someone singing a major pop song.<\/p>\n<p>After the opening tracks Taggart mostly takes a backseat on the rest of the album to featured vocalists, though he does show up on the single \u201cParis\u201d and the particular lowlight of the whole affair, \u201cYoung.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Songwriter Emily Warren is called in to provide vocals for a couple tracks, and while she\u2019s a serviceable singer, she doesn\u2019t really bring anything compelling to the table in the form of personality. Along with Warren, Coldplay is featured on the album\u2019s other single, \u201cSomething Just Like This.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jhen\u00e9 Aiko and Florida Georgia Line also star in \u201cWake Up Alone\u201d and \u201cLast Day Alive\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n<p>All of these tracks are accompanied by piano-based, light electronic dance music that comes across as bland and generic.<\/p>\n<p><em>Memories\u2026 Do Not Open<\/em> is, in my opinion, a boring experience that never really goes anywhere or does anything interesting.
