{"id":8379,"date":"2017-02-14T15:46:58","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T20:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=8379"},"modified":"2017-04-18T10:43:32","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T15:43:32","slug":"2017-annual-morningside-college-jazz-festival-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/8379","title":{"rendered":"2017 Annual Morningside College Jazz Festival a Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(02.14.2017) By Tabatha Storesund &#8212; <\/strong>The 45<sup>th<\/sup> annual Morningside College Jazz Festival was held February 1<sup>st<\/sup> through the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> in Eppley Auditorium, incl<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8380\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jazz Festival\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed-532x800.jpg 532w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2017\/02\/unnamed.jpg 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>uding over 38 bands from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Tony Hutchins is the man behind all preparation for the festival.\u00a0 He says, \u201cI plan the festival a year out which involves hiring guest artists and adjudicators first.\u00a0 Then the sound engineer, followed by sending out emails and snail mail to a four-state area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jazz Festival aims to take place annually, but there was once a period of time when the festival was not taking place.\u00a0 When the Jazz Festival came back to Morningside College in 2011 under the direction of Dr. Lambert, it became an annual tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hutchins says, \u201cSince I came on board as the Director of Instrumental Jazz and Low Brass in the fall of 2012, it has grown under my leadership from a two day festival to a three day festival, starting with 16 bands and this year having 38 bands in attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hutchins also says, \u201cHigh School bands start preparing for the festival in October and November.\u201d\u00a0 This gives the high school bands four months to prepare for the Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The high school bands prepare for a long time because, according to Professor Hutchins, \u201cMorningside\u2019s Festival is a State wild card qualifier for the Iowa Jazz Championships.\u00a0 Meaning, if you get first or second place in each class, you automatically get a bid to have the chance to compete in the State Jazz Competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hutchins also brings in a few of his Jazz students every year to help him run the festival along with other faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Hutchins the Jazz Festival \u201cis a big deal\u201d.\u00a0 This year, Professor Hutchins and the people helping him made the Jazz Festival \u201canother success.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(02.14.2017) By Tabatha Storesund &#8212; The 45th annual Morningside College Jazz Festival was held February 1st through the 3rd in Eppley Auditorium, including over 38 bands from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
