Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. This illness can last up to two weeks with various symptoms that include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.

“Being around over 1,000 new people is hard for your body to adjust and build up immunity to these new elements,” Garvey explained. “Crowded environments and physical contact increases the spread of germs.”

Getting the flu is worse then the flu shot, but some people remain skeptical about getting the vaccine. There have been rumors surrounding the flu shot claiming it makes people ill.

Garvey said the shot cannot cause illnesses or “colds,” though the vaccine may make some people feel tired as their body responds. Garvey’s question for students is, “Can you afford not to get the vaccine?” The answer is no.

Influenza is highly communicable and can last up to two weeks. That’s two weeks in bed recovering: no school, no work, and no sports. Keeping yourself immune to the flu also protects others. This is very important while student teaching, practicums, clinicals, and winter sports. The flu can quickly wipe out a whole team.

You can get vaccinated October 19 from 11 to 1 in Yockey, or make an appointment with the nurse. It will take five to ten minutes. The shot costs $20, and can be charged to your student account.

By Alyssa Nehring–Carol Garvey has one response when asked about flu shots: “Yes you should.” Garvey, RN on staff at Morningside, is a huge advocate for preventing the spread of influenza.
