\"oscar\"<\/a>By Derek Krayenhagen–The end of February is fast approaching and that means one thing for movie lovers, The Oscars!<\/p>\n

The Oscars is the time for celebrating all the great movies that took place the following year so in this case 2015.  I will be giving out my predictions for the winners of all categories but only going into depth on what I consider the \u201cBig 4″: Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.<\/p>\n

Lets just get right to it, the nominees for Best Actress are: Cate Blanchet for Carol<\/em>, Brie Larson for Room<\/em>, Jennifer Lawrence for Joy<\/em>, Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years<\/em>, and Saoirse Ronan for Bro<\/em>oklyn<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This category honestly doesn\u2019t have much star power this year and I think Brie Larson will be the obvious choice. Room<\/em> was such a powerful and challenging role that I think Brie needed to bring her A-game and  she did, and for that she will be awarded.<\/p>\n

Best Actor, the one everyone is keeping their eye on because of the elephant on the red carpet: Leonardo Dicaprio, who has been nominated for six Academy Awards but has not won–yet.This may be his year for his role in The Revenant.<\/em><\/p>\n

Even though Dicaprio seems to be the best bet the other nominees are: Bryan Cranston for Trumbo<\/em>, Matt Damon for The Martian<\/em>, Michael Fassenbender for Steve Jobs<\/em>, and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl<\/em>. Leo will be my choice but I would like to point out a spoiler and that spoiler could be Fassenbender for Steve Jobs<\/em>. He was great and as much as I think Leo Dicaprio deserves an Oscar, I don\u2019t know if it is necessarily for this movie.<\/p>\n

Best Director, because direction is very important to movies. It is their job to keep things in order and to bring the movie to life. The nominees for Best Director are: Tom McCarthy for Spotlight<\/em>, Adam McKay for The Big Short<\/em>, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em>, Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu for The Revenant<\/em>, and Lenny Abrahamson for Room<\/em>. Inarritu seems to be the smart choice because of the buzz around him and The Revenant<\/em> but against my better judgment I am going with George Miller and Mad Max<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Finally the BIG ONE, Best Picture. This is the category that tops off the night, the one movie buffs care about. There were some great movies this year and this was such a tough category but here are the nominees: Spotlight<\/em>, The Big Short<\/em>, The Revenant<\/em>, Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em>, The Martian<\/em>, Bridge of Spies<\/em>, Brooklyn<\/em>, and Room<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Many of the experts are leading towards The Revenant<\/em>. I am leaning towards Spotlight<\/em>, I think this movie will gain enough traction to pick up the win but honestly I could even see Mad Max<\/em> pulling this one out.  If I had to go out on a limb my choice would be Spotlight<\/em> but maybe I\u2019m biased because I\u2019m a communications major, I don\u2019t know!<\/p>\n

The other categories and my prediction for each are:<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actor \u2013 Sylvester Stallone (Creed<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actress \u2013 Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Best Original Screenplay \u2013 Spotlight<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Adapted Screenplay \u2013 The Big Short<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Animated Feature \u2013Inside Out<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Foreign Language Film \u2013 Son of Saul<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Documentary Feature \u2013 Amy<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Cinematography \u2013 The Revenant<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Film Editing \u2013 The Big Short<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Production Design \u2013 Mad Max<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Costume Design \u2013 Mad Max<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Original Song \u2013 Ennio Moricone (Hateful 8<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Best Original Song \u2013 Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Best Visual Effects \u2013 Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Makeup and Hairstyling \u2013 Mad Max<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Sound Mixing \u2013 The Revenant<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Sound Editing \u2013 The Revenant<\/em><\/p>\n

There is still the short film category stuff but I’m not familiar with that category so I don’t to pull an opinion out of thin air.<\/p>\n
