One that has stood out has been the Philosophy Club. Their annual zombie events as well as their growing numbers earned them the title of Morningside’s November Group of the Month.

Every month, Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), an honors society on campus, nominates numerous outstanding students and groups. The criteria can vary from putting on a successful event to being the biggest supporter of Morningside Athletics. There are several reasons that someone, or a group, earns a nomination. From there, the entire group of ODK students and faculty vote and the majority vote receives the title.

This month, the Philosophy Club was recognized for their successful Zombie vs. Humans campus-wide event, which lasted a full week. This is a fundraiser they put on that helps fund a conference for a few members. When Alden Stout, the faculty advisor for this group, found out that were the group of the month he said, “I was really excited. We are a fairly new club so everyone was really excited about it. It was a nice honor to be chosen out of all the different clubs.”

The philosophy club currently has 25-30 members. They meet Mondays in the Spoonholder Café on campus and talk about “fun topics but in a fun way.” Stout said that primarily the students lead this club. They choose the topic and lead the discussions. This allows students to not simply learn about philosophy, but also to put it into practice and allow them to think deeper.

Many people join this group. Very few members are actually philosophy majors. This is a place to explore and to allow for individualized thinking. Alden invites all people that “want to talk about ideas or something they learned in class” to this group.

By Kara Bentz–There are several up-and-coming groups on Morningside’s campus.
