Students can minimize their risk of this happening to them.

A strange thing about these break-ins was the thefts occurred in no specific pattern. The five cars were parked in random places all over the lot. They were not all generally newer or older; it varied.

The thief/thieves broke through the window of each of the cars; however, there did not appear to be a reason for the break in. The evidence showed they rummaged through areas of the car and took small things like change or cigarettes. Also, this occurred between 5:30 am and 6 am. This is usually a busier time in the morning because people are leaving for work. Break-ins usually occur earlier in the morning.

Brett Lyon, head of security for Morningside College, said, “Every year we get some vandalism or car break-ins. The biggest thing with people is if you don’t give burglars an opportunity by having things out in the open in your car then there is less of a chance. Don’t have things in your vehicle.”

Students can also do their part in preventing campus crimes by reporting suspicious behavior. Brett found out after the break-ins that students had heard car alarms going off that morning. However, there were no phone calls to campus security or the police department.

Brett says, “If students are out and about at 2 in the morning and see something, call us. If students hear information about things that happened, let somebody know. Security can’t do and be everywhere. We need everyone’s help to keep people safe.”

The crime level on Morningside’s campus is minimal, but in order to keep it low and ensure safety, everyone must do their part.

By Kara Bentz–On October 2oth at 5:30am, five vehicles were broken into in the Olson Student Parking lot.
