Students were unable to access the college’s CampusWeb to register for classes for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Students were greeted with the message,

“CampusWeb is at capacity 🙁 There are a lot of people accessing CampusWeb right now and it may take a couple minutes to free up. Thank you for your patience. Please refresh the page to try again in a few minutes!”

Garrett Thomas, a senior Business and Religious Studies major, said, “I was hopeful this time around, but when 11:01 came around all hope was lost.”

Sydney Kinzer, a junior elementary education major, was worried she couldn’t get into some of her classes, “It is very slow and the capacity is full. I am nervous I won’t get into my classes.”

Dr. William Deeds, provost at Morningside College, is aware of the issues with CampusWeb. The problem for students registering on campus lies with many students trying to access the same link with a limited amount of bandwidth. To better understand the problem he compares it to rush hour traffic when six lanes of traffic are merging into two.

A lot of students expected registration to go like this so for Channing Pick, a junior corporate communications major, registration became more of an annoyance, “It’s annoying, but I’m not worried. I just want it to get done. I’ve never had this much of a problem.”

Junior World/American/History education major Alec DeVries was able to register after waiting, “It’s been a struggle trying to register and having to constantly refresh the page. It isn’t the biggest issue because I have patience, but for someone that doesn’t it would be a problem.”

Many students are urging the college to fix the problems in the registration process to avoid issues like this in the future.

Student Advocate Paul Johnson says, “The college knows about the problem. I am hoping something will be done soon. Maybe a change in the way we register.”

Rachel Leonhardt, a junior integrated community service major, said, “The school needs to think of a better way to organize students signing up for classes so that people aren’t up half the night waiting to get in classes they may not be able to get into.”

According to Deeds other options are being looked at to improve the efficiency of the CampusWeb registration experience. The more data, both positive and negative, that is received from students helps in determining what needs to be done.

For any student who doesn’t get into required class he promises, “If there is a student who could not get a class that they needed to graduate we’ll take care of that student. They should come to my office and see my associate dean. I’ll make sure they get a class, we’re not going to slow anyone down from graduation because of not getting into classes.”

While registration was a hassle for many there was a lucky few whose registration process was a breeze. Kari Miller, a junior counseling psychology major, had this to say about CampusWeb, “I’m a lucky one and mine is working.”

Many students were able to register after about 20–30 minutes of waiting and refreshing their Internet browser.

By Jordan Heim—Many junior and senior level students were frustrated Tuesday night, March 17, with the inability to signup for classes.
