There\u2019s even a dating site for women to seek them out! While most college students end up dating fellow students, some collegians are lucky enough to snag a man in uniform. This can throw a wrench into<\/p>\n<p><b>Air Guard<\/b><br \/>\n\u201cI like having pictures on my Facebook of us with him in his uniform,\u201d Michelle Kuester said with a laugh of her Iowa Air Guard boyfriend Andrew Snyder. \u201cIt makes me feel noble.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4829\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4829 \" style=\"margin-left: 7px;margin-right: 7px\" alt=\"Andrew Snyder and Michelle Kuester\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n-200x239.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n-200x239.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n-333x400.jpg 333w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n-667x800.jpg 667w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2013\/02\/179969_10151197097369115_225319387_n.jpg 801w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Snyder and Michelle Kuester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Snyder has been in the Air Guard for three years, working as an aircraft mechanic. \u00a0&#8220;Everyone automatically assumes that since I am in the Air Force, that means I am a pilot or fly airplanes,\u201d Snyder said. \u201cThey think that&#8217;s the only job the Air Force offers.\u201d Although he\u2019s enjoying his job as a mechanic now, his life goal is to be an airline pilot. After graduation, Snyder plans on applying to be an Air Guard pilot. &#8220;The reason I joined was the idea that I could have the military train me to fly instead of me paying for the training myself on the civilian side,&#8221; Snyder explains.<\/p>\n<p>Kuester and Snyder have been dating for a year and a half. Kuester said that his service has barely impacted the relationship at all. \u00a0\u201cNo one really knows he\u2019s in the military. Andrew does drill two days a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before they were dating, \u201cAndrew was in Qatar, but never saw combat,\u201d Kuester explained. Now Snyder only leaves for training a few days a month and she is perfectly happy with that. \u201cDay to day, I\u2019m not worried,\u201d Kuester said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She does worry when I fly in the tanker, though,&#8221; Snyder added.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the couple isn\u2019t totally in the clear. \u201cIf nukes started going off, he\u2019d probably have to go and that scares me,\u201d Kuester said of North Korea\u2019s new nuclear missile tests. \u201cHe\u2019s young and agile. If things got bad, they\u2019d force him to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a valid concern. Airmen from the 185<sup>th<\/sup> Refueling Wing in Sioux City just returned home from a deployment in October.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder is more than confident in the relationship, even if a deployment were to come up. &#8220;That&#8217;s a hurdle we&#8217;ll get over when the time comes. Our relationship is stable enough that we would make it through.&#8221; He cites Skype as a good tool for coping with any distance that may occur.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Snyder is safe on campus and is finishing his American history degree at Morningside. Kuester will graduate in May.<\/p>\n<p><b>Army National Guard<\/b><br \/>\nWhitney and Josh Dawson have been happily married since October 27 of 2012. I was not excited at all, but I learned to cope and be supportive eventually. Basic was definitely the hardest thing I have gone through with the Army,\u201d Whitney said. \u201cI had just started college. It was a major change when we weren\u2019t able to talk. Going from talking every day to receiving letters every once in a while was definitely a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people assumed I would always be super depressed when he would leave for weeks at a time,\u201d Whitney said of her friends and family. The relationship still wasn\u2019t anything like <i>Army Wives. <\/i>\u00a0\u201cAlthough it was tough, I learned to deal with it. You learn that you have to be strong for your significant other to keep them going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soldiers and their significant others sometimes encounter insensitive questions such as how many terrorists died at their hand, but the Dawsons have luckily avoided situations like that. Whitney feels for those who are hammered with tough questions, though. \u201cThese guys are highly trained to deal with things like this. These soldiers know when they are to kill someone and would never act inhumanely,\u201d Whitney said. \u201cThe soldiers are doing their best to work for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josh will not re-sign with the Army.
