Working at the Spoonholder, Hyper Center, or Bucks saves gas money, and is a great way to earn money while socializing with fellow Morningside students.

But just like any other part-time jobs, on-campus workers have a few things they wish students knew. We aren’t just student workers; we’re people just like you! Give us a break.

Tips from Admissions tour guides:

–Say hi! Nothing kills a tour with a prospective student like walking past current students who seem unfriendly.

–Hold a door. Walking backwards and reciting facts about every building on campus isn’t easy. It really helps us out if you’ll open or hold a door for us. Plus, it impresses the families and students visiting campus.

–Pipe up! Have you got a positive thing to say about Morningside? Chime in! Tour guides generally don’t mind having third-party input.

Tips from Front Desk Attendants

–Remember that we aren’t R.A.’s. We don’t have keys to your room. Don’t get upset that we can’t unlock your door for you.

–We also aren’t Campus Security. We have to man our desks. We can give you numbers to call an R.A. or Campus Security, though!

Tips from an R.A.

-We aren’t dumb. Yes, we know what you are doing. No, you aren’t getting away with anything. We have procedures that we have to follow if you break rules.

–We’re here to help. We’ve been trained in dealing with relationship and friendship problems, as well as other situations that require mediating. Let us know if there is something we can help with- make our training useful!

-Share your creativity. If you have ideas for a cool bulletin board or hall activity, let us know! It’s good to have input from residents as opposed to R.A.’s making all of the decisions.

Tips from Tech Services

–Save yourself a trip. If your wireless isn’t working, make sure that your wireless switch is turned on. If your computer won’t turn on, make sure the battery is charged. Make sure you install your updates frequently. We see lots of silly problems like this!

–We’re good, but we aren’t miracle workers. Some computer problems take a few hours to hash through. Don’t expect to drop of your computer, wait for five minutes, and be on your way. Give us an afternoon and we’ll probably get it fixed.

Tips from Campus Security

–Keep a spare key for your car in your dorm. We can’t open every make and model, so it’s better if you have a back-up plan and use us as a last resort.

–Don’t tattle. There are some things that you’re better off telling an R.A. Roomie conflicts are no fun, but if no rules are being broken, we really can’t do anything for you.

By Claire DeRoin ~ On-campus jobs are a fantastic solution to the part-time job dilemma many students face while in college.
