The opening track, St. Chroma, featuring Daniel Caesar, sets the tone with a mix of self-reflection and confidence. The introduction of a new persona, St. Chroma, signals another transformation in Tyler’s journey.

Throughout the album, he battles with themes of fame, identity, and personal growth. Noid is a standout, diving into the world that comes with success and exposing the isolation and fake connections that come with being in the spotlight. The honesty makes it one of the album’s highlight moments.

One of the album’s strengths is its balance of making the listener think and energy. Tracks like Sticky and Balloon bring an infectious energy that cuts through some of the heavier themes.

The features on this album are also well-chosen. Daniel Caesar’s smooth vocals on St. Chroma add emotional depth, while Doechii’s verse on Balloon injects a fresh, dynamic energy. Unlike some albums where guest appearances feel forced, these collaborations feel like they belong to Tyler’s vision.

Another highlight is I Killed You, where Tyler gets personal about accountability and self-doubt. The song explores themes of Black identity and self-acceptance, and the vulnerability in his lyrics makes it one of the most emotional tracks on the album.

That being said, CHROMAKOPIA isn’t perfect. A few tracks, like Judge Judy, fall flat with weaker writing. There are moments where Tyler leans into exaggerated vocal deliveries that might not be for everyone, making certain songs feel out of place.

Additionally, while the album’s genre-mixing mostly works, there are times when the production overshadows the lyrics. Some tracks feel a bit overproduced, making it harder to connect with the message Tyler is trying to pass.

If you’re a fan of alternative hip-hop and experimental production, this album is right up your alley. Longtime Tyler fans will appreciate his evolution, while new listeners will find a mix of thought-provoking themes and infectious beats. It’s the kind of album that rewards multiple listens, you’ll hear something new each time.

Tyler, The Creator has proven he’s in a league of his own. CHROMAKOPIA is ambitious, personal, and sonically rich, even if it has a few missteps along the way. It’s not his best work, but it’s another strong addition to his career that shows his willingness to take risks.

Four out of five stars

by Maron Marcel Guimaraes — Tyler, The Creator’s CHROMAKOPIA album is a 14-track album packed with genre-bending production, interesting lyrics, and Tyler’s signature different flair, offering an immersive listening experience.
