{"id":16268,"date":"2025-02-27T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T21:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=16268"},"modified":"2025-02-28T11:57:44","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T17:57:44","slug":"mustangs-celebrate-senior-day-with-victories-over-briar-cliff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/16268","title":{"rendered":"Mustangs Celebrate Senior Day with Victories Over Briar Cliff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Jesus Jimenez \u2014<\/strong> The Morningside basketball teams concluded their regular season at home with big wins on Senior Day, as both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s teams defeated Briar Cliff Saturday, Feb. 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women&#8217;s team achieved an upset against No. 5 Briar Cliff, winning 76-74 in their final home game. The men&#8217;s team followed with a strong second-half comeback, defeating the Chargers 88-81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women Achieve Remarkable Upset<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mustangs (12-14, 10-10 GPAC) entered the game as underdogs but played tough defense to secure the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were intense the whole time defensively,\u201d said head coach Jamie Sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexis Spier made a crucial free throw with 6:57 remaining, putting Morningside in the lead. We\u2019re going to play that team again, and it\u2019s great knowing we can beat Briar Cliff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vollertsen recorded a double-double, contributing 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordyn Carr added 10 points and five assists. Coming off the bench, Tonja Heirigs made three 3-pointers and finished with a total of 11 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the game, seniors Spier, Chaise Pfanstiel, and Baylie Girres, along with student assistant coach Maddie Craighead, were honored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pfanstiel recorded six points, five rebounds, and three assists. Although Girres did not participate in this game, she recently achieved a season-high of eight points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur seniors have meant everything to our program,\u201d Sale stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningside is the No. 6 seed in the GPAC Tournament and will face Briar Cliff again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men Return to Defeat Briar Cliff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the women\u2019s team secured a victory, the men\u2019s team followed up with a hard-fought 88-81 win against Briar Cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a pretty good example of what these seniors mean to us,\u201d head coach Trent Miller said. \u201cThey\u2019ve been through a lot together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mustangs (20-8, 14-6 GPAC) trailed by 11 points early in the second half but refused to give up. Joey Skoff made a crucial three-pointer that put just over two minutes left to give Morningside the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a shot we work on every day in practice,\u201d Skoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skoff, Morningside&#8217;s all-time leading scorer, recorded 31 points and made key free throws at the end to secure the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff-800x577.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16278\" style=\"width:313px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff-800x577.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff-400x288.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff-200x144.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff-768x554.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2025\/02\/Skoff.jpeg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Joey Skoff ~ Photo: by Morningside University <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Justin Sitti sealed the victory with a dunk in the final seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Brocaille recorded 15 points and nine rebounds, while Brendan Buckley contributed 14 points and five assists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mustangs honored seniors Ethan Alfers, Brendan Buckley, Charlie Fletcher, Tyson Gordon, Dylan Johnson, Sitti, Skoff, Aidan Vanderloo, and Aiden Westra before the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a special group,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningside will now play Dakota Wesleyan at home in the first round of the GPAC Tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Senior Day Ends on a High Note<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With both teams getting wins over Briar Cliff, Morningside finished its home season.
