by Chaise Pfanstiel–<\/strong>Morningside\u2019s women\u2019s basketball team is now 11 games into their 2023-24 season. The team is currently sitting at 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The girls are currently on a three-game win streak and hope to continue that streak against Dakota State Monday, December 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mustangs started the season 2-0, but then things took a slight dip after losing three big conference games in a row. Head coach Jamie Sale said the team started out a little slower than he had hoped. The Mustangs have a lot of new players, and the veterans had to fit into new roles. Despite that, the team has continued to push through adversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel our team has improved a lot on the defensive end. We have also rebounded the ball well. We need to work on improve offensively. Our shooting percentage needs to improve, and we need to take care of the ball better,\u201d Coach Sale added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team will have a break after the Monday game, with January 6 being the next scheduled game. During that time coach Sale said he is hoping the team can find its identity as an offense and reduce mistakes defensively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spark coming off the bench for the Mustangs has been sophomore center Lily Vollertsen. Vollertsen is averaging nine points per game, holding a 44.2 field goal percentage, and pulling down 4.5 rebounds per game.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have grown into my role. I go into every game with a positive mindset in hopes of being able to prove myself and contribute to a team win,\u201d Vollertsen said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these first 11 games, Vollertsen thinks the Mustangs have done a better job playing together as a team but can improve on playing to one another\u2019s strengths.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the way we have been performing recently, I think these next few matchups will be very exciting games for us,\u201d Vollertsen added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women Mustangs won\u2019t play at home until Saturday, January 13 when they face Doane University. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
