These are what can be expected when watching Netflix’ new Action/Comedy movie Red Notice. In the first three days after its release on November 5, the film attracted 4.2 million households in the US alone.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot, Red Notice features an A-list cast. Reynolds plays the self-proclaimed “greatest thief in the world,” Nolan Booth, who is on the hunt for three priceless golden artifacts, “Cleopatra’s eggs.” Johnson, who plays FBI profiler John Hartley, has other plans for Booth and catches him after he successfully steals the first egg. After he becomes the victim of an elaborate conspiracy, however, Hartley has to work with Booth to steal the three eggs before Booth’s fellow art thief “the Bishop” can do so. “The Bishop” is portrayed by Gal Gadot.

As can be expected from two actors best known for their comedic roles in other movies, Reynolds’ and Johnson’s continuous banter successfully caters the easy humor. In the style of most thief movies, Red Noticefeatures complex deceptions until the end and characters who race to be one step ahead of one another. Unlike most serious thief movies, such as Ocean’s Eleven, the plot of Red Notice is fairly thin, straight forward and at some points makes little sense. Take the random appearance of Ed Sheeran, for example.

Personally, I usually don’t like the comedy movies of our time, but I have to admit that I got a good two hours of chuckling out of this one. I’d recommend watching this movie, when you want to turn your brain off for a while and enjoy some easy entertainment.

Apart from Cleopatra’s golden eggs, Red Notice also features some easter eggs. If scanned, the QR code that is displayed on an invitation card for an event, for example, brings the viewer to a website that holds the blooper reel of the movie. Some extra fun on top of an already humorous film, so to say.

Looking at Red Notice solely from a comedic standpoint, I would rate it a 4.5 out of 5. If you are looking for a serious action movie with complex fight scenes, however, you should probably skip this one for now.

Comedy, light-heartedness, and a déjà-vu of Ocean’s Eleven.
