The 93 minute movie follows high school senior Quinn Ackerman while she is interviewing for Duke. When her admissions counselor tells her she’s too boring and needs to “break out of the box,” she starts learning how to dance.

The movie stars big-name actors and influencers including Sabrina Carpenter (singer and Maya Hart on Girl Meets World), Jordan Fisher (singer and John Ambrose in To All the Boys: P. S. I Still Love You), and Liza Koshy who is best known for her work with former boyfriend David
Dobrik.

The movie starts with a monologue from Quinn where she quotes Albert Einstein and Kim Kardashian. From that point on, I knew I would enjoy the movie. I mean c’mon, Einstein and Kim in the same paragraph?

The movie continues to follow Quinn and her best friend Jas (Liza Koshy). Jas is a member of the Thunderbirds, their high school’s award-winning dance team. Her dream is to get into the New York Dance academy who is scouting the big “end of the year” Work It Dance Competition.

Spoiler (but not really): Quinn can’t dance. But she needs to learn for her admissions rep at Duke. This is where we begin to follow her story and grip our armrests in desperation of answering the questions, “Will Quinn get into Duke?”

Okay, not really. I was never particularly sitting on the edge of my seat and the jumps the show made were definitely guess-able.

I will say, however, that this show included quite a few pop culture references that I LOVED. It does make a difference in some of the jokes if you haven’t seen the movie or show though.

Despite the lack of a new and exciting storyline, I genuinely enjoyed this movie. I haven’t really been able to say that about new movies recently, but maybe that’s just because a majority of filming and releases were put to a halt.

I would give this movie had 7 out of 8 of their dancers counting their four-counts correctly.

By Mari Pizzini While quarantine has us all “working it” from home, Netflix released a new dance-oriented movie called Work It on August 7, 2020.
