{"id":12121,"date":"2020-09-08T11:56:38","date_gmt":"2020-09-08T16:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=12121"},"modified":"2020-09-08T12:02:46","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T17:02:46","slug":"phi-alpha-theta-to-restart-mentorship-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/12121","title":{"rendered":"Phi Alpha Theta to restart Mentorship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Mari Pizzini<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phi Alpha Theta (PAT), Morningside\u2019s History Honors Society, is restarting a mentorship program for history students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis mentor program is a group of upperclassmen history majors who have been assigned two-three underclassmen history majors or minors, in hopes of helping them with the adjustment to college and helping them feel welcomed to and prepared for Morningside&#8217;s History Program,\u201d Riley Slechta, PAT\u2019s President, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the mentors are all members of PAT, Slechta said this could change. Lauryn Baehr, PAT\u2019s Vice President, said that the mentor program was created to adjust to the college\u2019s COVID-19 specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to be there for the underclassmen who might not have access to their professors or the history community as they have had in the past,\u201d Baehr said. \u201cThis program is basically a support system.\u201d Mentors are expected to meet with their mentees once a month, and should send email check-ups once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baehr said, \u201cI will be there to help with the history courses [the mentees] are taking, citations, questions about the department, and just to give advice to the younger generation of history students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan Epp, PAT\u2019s Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian, said that the lack of ability to have a semester get together in the history department was one of the deciding factors for creating this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have very high hopes for this program,\u201d Slechta said. \u201cI want this program to help inspire a sense of community and belonging. The mentors will helpfully create a sense of community in the department.
