{"id":11711,"date":"2020-02-28T01:20:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T07:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=11711"},"modified":"2020-02-28T01:22:48","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T07:22:48","slug":"infinite-jux-alum-art-on-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/11711","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Infinite Jux:&#8217; alum art on display"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Tracie Tuttle\u2013<\/strong> Michael Cody Drury, a Morningside alum, currently has his art on display at the Sioux City Art Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show, titled \u201cInfinite Jux,\u201d is a collection of oil paintings that focus on the relationship between objects in the foreground and background of each artwork. Because of Drury&#8217;s use of bright, contrasting colors and shapes, he effectively creates the illusion of 3D space on the 2D canvas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/02\/Drury1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/02\/Drury1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/02\/Drury1-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/02\/Drury1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/02\/Drury1-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>Reception for &#8220;Infinite Jux&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about his art, Drury said, \u201cThe distinguishing point of these is that the layers are photo realistic, [they\u2019re based on] photo collages I developed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artist continued by referring to crossfading, a technique that DJs use when transitioning between songs, as one way to interpret and understand his art. He also encouraged viewers to come to their own conclusion about the meaning of each piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe quality of painting humbles me. I am overwhelmed. They are so beautiful, so rich,\u201d said Terri McGaffin, long-time mentor of Drury\u2019s and Morningside professor emerita<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went on to say that \u201cWords cannot describe this kind of interest in juxtaposing, in contradicting things, but making them come together and harmonious; I see it in his paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Morningside in 2006, Drury went on to\nearn his Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York.\nHe currently lives in Queens, New York, where he continues to create a variety\nof art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cInfinite Jux\u201d is\nopen until May 3 and is free and open to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn more about the artist on his <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelcodydrury.com\/\">website<\/a> or follow him on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/liminalisms\/\">Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tracie Tuttle\u2013 Michael Cody Drury, a Morningside alum, currently has his art on display at the Sioux City Art Center.
