{"id":11575,"date":"2020-02-21T00:51:23","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T06:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=11575"},"modified":"2020-02-21T01:04:55","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T07:04:55","slug":"van-vliet-shares-her-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/11575","title":{"rendered":"Van Vliet shares her faith"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Mari Pizzini\u2013<\/strong> Andy Nelson and Campus Ministries continued their M\u2019side Chapel: Student Faith Stories series on Wednesday, February 12, in the Yockey Room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small number of students, faculty, and staff gathered for twenty minutes to pray, sing, and hear Taylor Van Vliet, a junior at Morningside, give her faith testimony. I grew up in a\nclassic Dutch Christian Reform family,\u201d Van Vliet began. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\ncontinued by saying that she had asked to be saved when she was five, and\ndidn\u2019t really question what that meant until she was older. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van\nVliet attended Lincoln Christian School starting in kindergarten, and religion\nclasses were required to be attended by students. She began questioning the\nthings she had been taught when she was in seventh grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nrealized that these issues [concerning abuse and divorce] couldn\u2019t be as black\nand white as my teacher made them out to be,\u201d Van Vliet said. \u201cI really\nquestioned the way my school presented what a godly life should look like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nwere simply commanded to \u2018love our neighbors.\u2019 Biblical perspective came across\nslightly insensitive or just plain heartless,\u201d Van Vliet continued. \u201cRhetoric\nstripped other people of their humanity, simply turning them into problems a\nChristian would face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconclusion of her testimony brought listeners to her present perspective on\nChristianity by saying, \u201cwe are all broken and we all need God. For the first\ntime in my life I feel a pull towards God and I intend to follow it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van\nVliet was met with applause from the small audience. Many thanked her for her\ncourage to share her story afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelson\nfinished the service by reading Ephesians chapter 3:17-19, which speaks about\nthe depth of God\u2019s love.
