He won five championships, was an 18 time All-Star, on the All-NBA Team 15 times, and received four All-Star MVP awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11447\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/files\/2020\/01\/Kobe.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bryant\nwas an icon and role model for this generation of athletes and his \u201cmamba\nmentality\u201d was not only applied to basketball, but all sports and life in\ngeneral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Mustang basketball player Trystan Cummins took Kobe\u2019s death to heart. Asked about what Bryant meant to him, Cummins said, \u201cKobe is one of the main reasons I fell in love with basketball. I can\u2019t remember the last time I threw something in the trash and didn\u2019t jokingly yell &#8216;Kobe.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cummins went on to say, \u201cHe shaped my generation of athletes with his &#8216;mamba mentality&#8217; and I know myself and the rest of the Mustang basketball team will miss him and try to carry on his legacy every time we step onto the court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morgan Sale, a Morningside junior, said, \u201cI think having someone who is seen in the media as perfect and unattainable die so suddenly really puts your life into perspective. Kobe did great things in basketball, but he was destined to do even greater things in retirement\u2026 He started an exceptional youth basketball academy, and was just a great role model for my entire generation to look up to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sale\ncontinued, \u201cNow it is our turn to take that torch Kobe carried and carry\nourselves the way he did to inspire generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\ntragedy continues to affect people all across the world with viral montages,\ntweets, and quotes spreading across the internet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight other people died in the crash, including Bryant\u2019s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna; John Altobelli, head baseball coach at Orange Coast College in Orange County; Altobelli\u2019s wife and daughter, Keri and Alyssa; Sarah and Payton Chester of Orange County; Gianna\u2019s school basketball coach, Christina Mauser; and pilot Ara Zobayan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nLos Angeles Sheriff\u2019s department is continuing to investigate the crash.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Hailey Barrus \u2013 Basketball icon Kobe Bryant died suddenly in a helicopter crash outside of Calabasas, California on Sunday, January 26.
