{"id":10757,"date":"2019-11-06T23:07:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T04:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/?p=10757"},"modified":"2019-11-10T08:38:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-10T13:38:09","slug":"dominant-second-half-lifts-mustangs-past-doane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/archives\/10757","title":{"rendered":"Dominant Second Half Lifts Mustangs past Doane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Steven Cutler&#8211;<\/strong>Morningside faced some challenges in the first half, but a quality second half gave the Mustangs a 42-10 win over the Doane Tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last time Morningside lost a Great Plains Athletic Conference game was in Crete to the Tigers in 2014.\u00a0\u00a0Since then, the Mustangs have won 40 straight conference contests, including Saturday&#8217;s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doane looked like they were going to give the NAIA\u2019s top-ranked football team all they could handle in the first half.\u00a0\u00a0An opportunistic defense picjed off two interceptions leading to points in the second quarter; one came when Morningside was in the red zone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningside was able to reach the endzone twice in the second quarter after being shutout in the first, but still went in to the half leading the Tigers 14-10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked for a comment on the first half, head coach Steve Ryan simply said they needed to finish drives and take care of the ball.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningside did exactly that in the second half.\u00a0\u00a0The Mustangs put up 28 unanswered second half points, winning the game 42-10 to improve their record to 8-0 in the season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the slow start, the NAIA\u2019s top team in offensive yards per game totaled 567 yards: 251 on the ground, and 316 through the air.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningside\u2019s defense continued to dominate, holding the Tigers to negative yards in rushing.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the second week in a row the Mustang defense has done so.&nbsp;&nbsp;Coach Ryan gave credit to the defense\u2019s pass rush during the post-game interview.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doane now falls to 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.\u00a0\u00a0The Tigers will travel to Fremont, Nebraska, next to take on the Midland Warriors to close out the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morningisde advances to 8-0 on the season and 7-0 in the GPAC.&nbsp;&nbsp;Morningside will welcome the Concordia Bulldogs to Sioux City this weekend.&nbsp;&nbsp;A matchup with conference rival, #5 Northwestern, still looms in the distance for the #1 Morningside Mustangs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Steven Cutler&#8211;Morningside faced some challenges in the first half, but a quality second half gave the Mustangs a 42-10 win over the Doane Tigers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":80,"featured_media":10758,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[170],"tags":[318,46725,6119,53984,46732],"class_list":["post-10757","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-football","tag-gpac","tag-morningside-college","tag-mustang-athletics","tag-mustangs"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10757","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/80"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10757"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10757\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10835,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10757\/revisions\/10835"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/10758"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10757"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10757"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/thecr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10757"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
