Article #4 Final

Previous cancellations due to COVID-19 have made Morningside track students nervous about their potential upcoming season.

Payton Boer is a senior at Morningside College and is a member of the track and cross-country teams. The team was able to have a successful cross-country season, where the women’s team made it to nationals. Which due to Covid, will occur in April.

Boer feels this success was definitely deserved and said, “Our team has been working hard all season long, it’s been a really special one and I’m excited to see what we can do at nationals.”

With the end of cross-country season, indoor track season begins. Or so it was supposed to. The team’s first meet was cancelled, and Boer is hoping it will be the last that is cancelled. “Things are getting really bad in Sioux City again and I really hope that doesn’t affect my final track season. Last year when we got shut down it was really hard, and I really missed it and I don’t want to go through that again” said Boer.

Two roommates of Boer: JoJo McKibben and Emalee Fundermann feel the same way. Fundermann is also a senior and says, “To have my last ever track moments taken away from me will suck so bad, I really hope we can continue on with our season.” Junior, McKibben said, “We worked the hardest we’ve ever worked this off-season and I don’t want to see all of that hard work go to waste. I’ve never felt better about my running abilities and I hope so bad that I get to compete at my best.”

Boer hasn’t been the most traditional student and has taken time off from Morningside here and there. If this season gets cancelled, she has to decide whether she wants to go another whole year to continue her running career. “This will be a very hard decision for me because I am so ready to graduate and continue on with my life. I’m 24 and most traditional college students have been in the workforce for a couple of years by 24. I will really be caught between deciding to continue running or move on with my life, and it might be the hardest decision I’ve ever made.”

Only time will tell whether or not this upcoming track season will occur. All Boer, McKibben, and Fundermann can do now is hope for the best and keep running.

The article I read for this week’s news comment is called “Biden might just run the most aggressive effort to combat climate change in U.S.” The article is from Mic.com.

The article talks about Biden’s plan to try to combat climate change, which is exactly what this country needs after four years of Trump not even believing in climate change. Biden plans to staff his administration with people who believe that climate change is real and needs to be addressed. He is creating new positions focused entirely on climate change. Biden plans to act as soon as he gets into the office.

This article was very refreshing to read and makes me hopeful for our future. Having a president who didn’t even believe in climate change for the last four years has been so concerning and I am so glad we are going to have someone in office that cares about our planet.

I think this article was written very well and it seems very promising and gives readers a gleam of hope. They gave a lot of good information on Biden’s plan and how he was going to enact his plan.

I think this article was aimed at climate change activists and people who just care about the earth in general.

The profile I decided to do was on Chris Stapleton. The article is titled ‘Christ Stapleton On Standing Still and Starting Over and is from GQ. Stapleton is a country singer-songwriter and he is releasing a new album, Starting Over, tomorrow, November 13. He finished this album in Feburary just before the lockdown.

Over quarantine Stapleton decided to start riding a bicycle. He said “I’m 42 years old and decided it’s a good idea to start riding a mountain bike. It’s been good—just a kind of release. In no way am I going to switch careers or anything.” He said it helps him “turn off part of your brain” and help clears space for the creative process to take place.

Stapleton has taken his free time over quarantine to appreciate the life he usually gets to live and he looks forward to get back to living life on the road.

I think this article was very well written and really showcases who Stapleton is. At the end of the article there is a Q&A and I think that will help his fans really connect with him and be able to know his true feelings. I liked reading and being able to relate to longing for the world to go back to normal. As much as I miss live music, I can’t even imagine how much these artists miss performing.

Chloe K. Anecdote

Chloe Krommendyk would describe herself as moody. Her roommates never know if they can or should talk to her because her mood is unpredictable. She said her roommates have to test the waters and if she’s in a good mood then they can continue on with the conversation but if she looks grumpy or moody, they usually just steer clear of her.

Her roommates are getting really good at reading her and now know whether it’s okay to approach her or avoid her completely. Krommendyk said “I am either really happy or really pissed off and there is no in between.”

Two days after “election day” and we still don’t have results. Anxieties are running high and fake news is everywhere. How are Morningside students coping with election stress? (Insert quote/s here). Morningside is doing a good job of helping students through these times by having stress relieving activities and allowing students to feel their emotions. We’re all in this together and soon it will all be over, and then we might have more issues to worry about.

A new article from Mic.com states that ancient remains prove women have been running shit for at least 9000 years. A skeleton of an ancient woman with hunting gear is challenging longstanding beliefs that men went out to hunt while women simply gathered. The 9,000 year old remains were found with a full hunting kit. The discovery spurred a team of archaeologists to investigate reports of other burial sites, leading them to theorize there were more gender-equal roles in ancient tribes than modern scholars thought. The archaeologists’ study was published in the journal ScienceAdvances on Wednesday. (Insert interview quote here). The study had a pretty small sample size but the authors believe it’s enough of a finding to conclude that women took part in big game hunting, so the next time someone times to stereotype me for not doing the dirty work, I’m sending them this link.

There is a lot of controversy around how Thanksgiving should be celebrated this year or if it should be celebrated at all. Obviously with Covid-19, big gatherings are frowned upon which is why we pretty much skipped Easter completely back in March when it seemed like Covid-19 had just begun. Are people over it now? Will they still gather with their families? I went to Morningside campus to see how Mside students feel about gathering for Thanksgiving and hear about their Thanksgiving plans. (Insert quotes)

The article I chose for this week’s news comment is called “Why election uncertainty is so hard to process, according to a psychologist.” The article is from Vox.com and was posted on November 4.

The article is about why this feeling of not knowing feels so uniquely awful. The short answer is that humans hate uncertainty. For a longer answer, the author went to Dr. Kevin Antshel, director of clinical training in the psychology department at Syracuse University. Dr. Antshel explained that as life has grown relatively more stable over the course of history, people crave that stability even more.

Dr. Antshel says that uncertainty is associated with depression and anxiety which is why this all feels so awful. Especially with all the access to social media and all of this negative media, it is not a great combination.

This article stuck out to me because I have been struggling with the election uncertainty. It’s the second day since the election and we still don’t have answers. I think the whole country hates this feeling of uncertainty. The world is complete chaos, especially on social media. My social media is filled with fake news of ‘election fraud’ and stopping the count and just a bunch of bull crap and that is even more disheartening.

I am glad this article was written because it is good to know that there is a reason why we are all feeling like this and it was good to read that there are legitimate reasons behind why we’re all feeling like this. I think this article was written specifically for that reason and it is aimed at people who are struggling to cope with this situation.

The article I choose for this week is called “The Fyre Fest guy was put in solitary confinement for taping a podcast in prison.” This article was posted to Mic.com on October 26.

The article talks about Billy McFarland, the mastermind behind the Fyre Festival scam of 2017. If you don’t know about the Fyre Festival, it was an event that McFarland created and was supposed to be a music festival in the Bahamas. When guests arrived they realized that there would be no guest artists, no five star food, and only tents to sleep in. It was a disaster and went viral on social media and Hulu and Netflix both put out documentaries about the Fyre Festival in 2019.

McFarland is currently serving 6 years in an Ohio penitentiary. He has been charged with several counts of wire fraud. Now, he is in solitary confinement for up to three months for taping a podcast from prison. His lawyer says nothing he did was illegal, but the feds punished him anyways.

I think this article is aimed at people who follow news around Billy McFarland and the Fyre Festival. I watched the Fyre Festival documentaries and I enjoyed watching them a lot so I like when I see news surrounded them. I like to know what McFarland is up to now. I honestly might listen to the podcast because I’m very curious to see what he has to say about everything.

I think this article did a good job of getting its point across. There were several quotes from McFarland’s lawyer and about the current situation but there was also enough background information so that if you didn’t really know about the Fyre Festival you could still read the article and know what is going on.

Media Comparison

The story I decided to cover is about Billie Eilish being body shamed. My print source was entitled ‘Billie Eilish shouldn’t have to keep answering questions about her body’ and was from Mic.com and the broadcast source was entitled ‘Billie Eilish Responds to ‘Wine Mom Body’ Shaming’ and was from Clevver News.

I think both sources were written/spoken well. They both had pretty much the same information and they both took the stance that no one should be judging an 18-year old’s body. Eilish is known to wear baggy clothes. She does this so no one can have an opinion on her body, because they have no clue what it looks like. This changed when paparazzi snapped a picture of her in a fitted tank top. The photo quickly went viral and the internet had several opinions on it.

Both articles quoted tweets and Instagram posts in which people were saying mean things about Eilish. Both articles specifically mentioned the tweet from a 29-year-old man from the U.K. who tweeted “in 10 months Billie Eilish has developed a mid-30’s wine mom body.” Both articles also talk about how Eilish ‘clapped back’ against trolls by sharing a TikTok on Instagram about people starting to normalize real bodies.

“Talk to a not-so-complete stranger”

Today I talked with JoJo McKibben. JoJo is a junior nursing major and is on the track and cross-country team at Morningside. JoJo and I went to high school together, so we definitely know each other but we have fell out of touch. I talked to JoJo about how school is going, and she is definitely struggling this semester. The nursing program is difficult as is, let alone in the middle of a global pandemic. She said they’ve been trying to cram in all their clinical hours the first half of the semester just in case we had to go remote again. On top of numerous clinical hours, they also have tests, homework, readings, and simulations. JoJo is stressed and overwhelmed and honestly, questioning her career path. She said she has talked to her professors about being stressed and overwhelmed and they basically told her that they agree. Even her professors are feeling burnt out, which she didn’t find much comfort in. On top of all her schoolwork JoJo has to practice daily because it is cross-country season. She also tries to balance her social life and boyfriend. I’ve always known JoJo to be a very stressed out person but talking her today it was more apparent than ever. This is the general consensus I’ve been getting from people these days. School has never been harder. With hybrid learning, online classes, and no breaks, we are getting our butts kicked and it sucks. Although I hate to hear that JoJo is stressed it’s nice to know I’m not the only one feeling this way.
