Super storm Sandy has damaged anything in its’ path, but has also brought a discovery of a skeleton found in New Haven.  A tree was uprooted and underneath, in its’ roots, is what seems a to be a time capsule holding human remains.  The area was a colonial burial ground but it was unknown that any remains were still in the ground there. City officials have roped off the area so a medical examiner can come get the body.

This is obviously news worthy because it is dealing with one of the largest natural disasters to hit the US. This is also bazaar though.  People are reading about finding destruction everywhere, but to have someone come across a skeleton is not common.  Also, it is news worthy because people didn’t know there was bodies in the ground here, it may lead to more digging up to see if anything else remains there. Also, stated in the article someone said this is someone’s family member.  So people need to know that if they had a family member possibly buried there, that the remains have come up and they deserve to have a proper burial again for them.

A man was cooked to death at a seafood factory in Santa Fe Springs, California.  The 62 year old worker of Bumble Bee Foods was found dead in the “steaming machine.”  They are still investigating how he ended up in the oven or if there was any safety violations. The plant has been suspended from operating until Monday.

This story is newsworthy because it is so bazaar.  People will be shocked by just reading the title of the article, making them read the whole thing.  It is not a long news story, but they are still trying to figure out reasons for the accident.  This could cause a follow up story that people will want to read to find out why he was in the oven. It would be newsworthy for people in the California area for people that know of that plant or get food from there.

Loans are haunting students everywhere and many people do not know how they will repay all the money borrowed to get an education. The major question here is: Is four years of college worth being 20 years in debt?

College students everywhere are worrying about the increasing costs of attending college. Costs of tuition, living, and other expenses are constantly increasing, causing stress levels of many students to rise as well.

Today in the working world everyone needs a college degree or possibly more to receive a job.  Many families though are in economic trouble, so paying for college may be something some people find unnecessary. Students need to realize the time and money for education will pay off.

Students in college are working to earn a degree to make a living once they have graduated college. This is a difficult situation because the job market is increasingly completive due to the combined effects of the recession and an ever increasing number of people who need jobs. To advance past certain levels of careers a college degree is necessary, but being thousands of dollars in debt just to try and get out of debt is a hard situation for many students.

Morningside college student Joe Tarpey says his worry about student debt is not obtaining a job with a high enough income to pay his loans starting six months after his graduation. Life comes with many expenses and those on top of student loans can require a large amount of money that could possibly be impossible to earn.  Joe explained his experiences, saying, “College is all fun and games for some people, but they need to realize the large amount of money they are putting into a degree should not be taken for granted.”

The average cost in 2011 for a four year institution was $22,000 per year.  Jerrie Hanson from Accounts Receivable at Morningside College said that the cost to attend this college increased four percent across the board. Those numbers can scare any student away from trying to achieve a degree. These numbers are increasing yearly.

There are a different number of solutions to convince students that higher education is a good economical choice. Four year state colleges are already much cheaper than a private education and with government aid nobody at state college usually has to pay full price. Jerrie Hanson also said Morningside College offers award packages to students depending on their year at the college, their financial aid package, and grades.  She also said, “At this private college we have comparable prices to others, and the cost to attend the college does not turn students away.”

Another Morningsider, Erin Wissink, is working to become a nurse practitioner resulting in possibly seven years of higher education. She believes her job choice will eventually pay for the time and money put into her education, but finds it discouraging knowing that to receive a better job later in life she will have to spend $75,000 on her education.  Erin believes, “A cut in tuition prices will increase the number of high school students enrolling in college directly after graduation.”

The struggle in college is not just receiving a passing grade, but also finding college to be a good economical choice. College costs are ever increasing and many students and their families are concerned about these costs.

A parking garage at the Miami Dade College in Doral, Florida collapsed on Thursday. Eight people were hospitalized and two were killed.  Another worker recently died making the death toll three. The collapse was said to be like, ” a pancake- style collapse.” Only construction workers were at the scene when the accident occurred. Debris flew 20 feet in the air and streets all around were blocked after the collapse.  They are still trying to find the cause of the tragedy.  Read the full story below.

This is newsworthy because not every day does a parking garage collapse. There could be a reason for this to collapse but in this story they do not seem to have a cause for it.  It was under construction so something could have gone wrong but they are still trying to find out what exactly happened.  It is unfortunate for all the workers in there, but this could have been a much worse situation if many people were in there parking or if there was thousands or millions of dollars in vehicles in the ramp when it collapsed.  People will still find this very newsworthy.

With families in economic trouble college is one thing on the list of needs that could be erased.  This could harm many people’s lives though. In the working world these days a person needs a college education to receive a job.

After speaking to a couple college students the struggle in college is not just receiving a passing grade, but also finding college to be a good economical choice. College costs are ever increasing and many students and their families are concerned about these cost. This will be an important topic in the upcoming election and Americans will want to know what their leaders are going to do about it. The future of American education is changing and it should concern students because it will directly affect them for most of their lives.

There are however a different number of solutions to this problem. Four year state colleges are already much cheaper than a private education and with government aid nobody at state college usually has to pay full price. There are also different scholarships and grants that students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds can receive. This government intervention comes at a cost however as the nation’s debt is in the trillions and economic recovery is still in the future. The U.S. could possibly publicize college education like other countries such as Germany and the U.K. This is not an impossible idea because President Obama has already publicized health care in the U.S. regardless of concerns about whether or not the government can guarantee quality or price.

Student loans and the price of an education are major factors in the upcoming election. Families all across America are wondering what each candidate claims they can do about education in this country. Without getting into political rhetoric basically the republican candidate Mitt Romney believes in the current system of working hard to achieve a degree because it insures quality in the students and in the colleges. Obama is more concerned about how we can change the way students pay for college and has hinted at a plan where the government will take greater steps to relieve student debt through the government forgiving loans.

Sickness and death has spread due to a fungal infection found in contaminated steroids.  Four deaths have been reported and 22 separate cases of illness. Several of the illnesses are severe causing clinics to close and/ or stop giving injections. The infection seems to be coming from contaminated vials of a pain treatment injected directly in the spine.  The drug is called methylprednisolone acetate. The steroid has been recalled but is not totally to blame. Health officials are checking other steroids and materials used to inject the steroids. Everyone that has received this steroid has been told to watch for symptoms and be checked out immediately if symptoms begin.

This is very newsworthy. People all around the states need to be aware of this outbreak.  The cases may be found in only a couple states but the steroid could be used anywhere, or the materials used could be found in many clinics.  Meningitis is very dangerous and people need to watch out for themselves and anyone they know that seems to have certain symptoms.

A gay couple from New Jersey is pressing charges against an anti- gay group called Public Advocate of United States. Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards got married in 2010 and took engagement pictures in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. Those pictures were recently placed in an ad sent out in a campaign for the Republican statehouse seats in Colorado. Tom and Brian are pressing charges in Colorado saying the group violated the law, damages, costs, and attorney fees for an unauthorized use of the copyrighted photo. The couple was notified of the mailers in June and is unsure of how they received the picture.  They are wanting to stand up for themselves and for other gays that could be attacked in the same way in the future. Read the article in the link below.

This can be news for people everywhere. Gay people are in each state and in many states are fighting for their rights.  So for a couple to be attacked like this something that will interest people.  The couple lived in New Jersey and the mailer was sent out in Colorado. This shows that people’s pictures are not safe if placed on the Internet.  People need to know this. They need to protect themselves and their property from being stolen or used without proper consent. Not only will it teach a lesson to people that are using the web, but it will also be interesting for people to follow the case to see what happens to the gay people fighting to defend themselves and other gay people that could be attacked for their choice in sex in partnership.

I have to get a piece of gum that isn’t pink.  My first thoughts were this is going to be easy because not many people eat bubble gum anymore they have mint gum.  Then I thought this is going to be very awkward to walk up to someone, and what student is going to have gum on them right now.  So I headed to Lewis Hall and went to student services. I approached Stacie Hayes.  Stacie is the career counselor for Morningside so she immediately asked what she could help me with.  Little did she know all I needed was a simple piece of gum.

This may have been the simplest question she has been asked from a student.  I didn’t know how to come out and say I needed gum. She may have thought, “Does she have bad breath,” or “Do I have bad breath.” Then I decided that the best way to get it over with was to ask the question directly and then go back and explain myself.  After I asked her for the gum she said, “It’s your lucky day because I usually don’t have any gum.” I did consider myself lucky because it wasn’t awkward at all for her, so this put me at ease and I could tell her about my class and assignment. Stacie is used to people needing things from her, but I am not used to asking strangers for things.  Therefore the conversation between us may have been more awkward for me than for Stacie.
