Morningside College has awarded its 2012 Sharon Walker\u00a0 Faculty Excellence Awards to Dr. Jackie (Brummond)\u00a0Barber 1995, professor of nursing\u00a0 education; Dr. Jessica deVega, assistant professor of religious studies; and\u00a0 Dr. David Elder, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric.<\/p>\n

Morningside President John Reynders presented the awards\u00a0 during the annual faculty banquet held December 15 at the Sioux City Country\u00a0 Club. The recipients, selected from a field of nominees by a panel of three\u00a0 outside evaluators, will each receive a $10,000 honorarium and $3,000 to use\u00a0 for faculty development.<\/p>\n

The Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards are funded by a\u00a0 gift from Morningside alumni Jim and Sharon Walker of Wayzata, Minn.<\/p>\n

Criteria for selection include teaching excellence,\u00a0 effective advising, scholarship and service to Morningside College. The awards\u00a0 are based upon the accomplishments and activities of a faculty member during\u00a0 the previous academic year.<\/p>\n

Barber started teaching at Morningside in 1997. She has a\u00a0 bachelor\u2019s degree from Morningside College, a master\u2019s degree from Creighton\u00a0 University in Omaha, Neb., and a doctorate from the College of Saint Mary in\u00a0 Omaha.\u00a0 The Walker Award evaluators cited\u00a0 Barber\u2019s passion for teaching that manifests itself through effective and\u00a0 innovative classroom work.<\/p>\n

DeVega joined the Morningside faculty in 2007. She has a\u00a0 bachelor\u2019s degree from Eckerd College of St. Petersburg, Fla., a master\u2019s\u00a0 degree from United Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Florida State\u00a0 University in Fort Lauderdale. The Walker Award evaluators noted that deVega\u2019s\u00a0 students and colleagues consistently praise her as a passionate, innovative and\u00a0 excellent teacher.<\/p>\n

Elder has been teaching at Morningside since 2010. He\u00a0 received a bachelor\u2019s degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa,\u00a0 and a doctorate from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The Walker Award\u00a0 evaluators commended Elder for his energetic and engaging teaching style that\u00a0 captures the attention of students and involves them in class activities.<\/p>\n

Evaluators for the 2012 Sharon Walker Faculty\u00a0 Excellence Awards were Dr. Suzette Astley, professor of psychology, Cornell\u00a0 College, Mount Vernon, Iowa; Dr. Christopher Gilbert, professor of political\u00a0 science, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn.; and Dr. John Krebs,\u00a0 professor of music, Hendrix College, Conway, Ark.<\/p>\n
