My interesting interviews.

Sometimes life gives you challenges, like talking to random people and asking them for lint out of their pockets.

As part of class today, I had to find student or faculty who would be willing to talk to me and express their favorite movies. I met with Tracy Tettle who loves movies, especially Harry Potter. Tettle said with a big grin,”I love Harry potter. I aspire to be Harry.” We began talking about Universal Studios and their fairly new addition to the Harry Potter section. She hopes to visit that amusement park some day in the near future.

The second part of this interview, I had to find someone on campus who had lint in his/her pocket. I ran into a nice fellow by the name of Andrew Nelson. When asking for lint in his pocket, he gave me a very funny look, as expected of course. Nelson said, “I don’t think I have any.”, while digging in his pocket. To his surprise he continues, “Oh wow, I have a lot.” He handed me a mixture of dirt and lint from his wrangler jean pocket. I thanked him for his efforts and said good day.

Man charged in killings of 4 women in Detroit.

DETROIT (AP) — A prosecutor announced murder charges Wednesday against a 34-year-old man in the slayings of four women whose deaths Detroit police have characterized as the work of a serial killer.

This mans name is Deangelo Martin. He was arrested in June and was already charged in the stabbing and sexual assault of 26 year old man as well as a kidnapping and assault of a 51 year old woman in May. He killed at least 4 woman while stowing their bodies in a vacant house in Detroit. Mayor Mike Duggan has plans to remove vacant housing in and effort to revive Detroit. The proposed resolution will be put on the March 2020 ballot and has been submitted to City Council.

Corey Williams is the author of this article and he does a great job with his lead at grabbing the readers attention. Using the word “slaying” is what initially made me want to read more into this as twisted as that sounds. So that was a great choice of word to use. It sounds like this man has killed a bunch of different woman by the way that this story was wrote, but i’m still unclear if it was him or not. It wasn’t specified. Maybe that is because the police have not figured that out yet, but that was confusing as a reader.

Quick Reflection

  1. I put the most effort into the research part of this essay. I read so many articles and tried to learn as much information I could to put into the article. I read a lot of articles to find out what would fit best into my paper as well. I think I had enough time for the research part of it, I think I should have focused on grammar and how to properly cite my sources.
  2. Trying not to add unnecessary words and sentences was the hardest part for me.
  3. At first my main topic was all over the place and I had trouble just focusing in on one topic. Once I received feedback from my classmates and teacher, it helped me a lot on honing in on one topic.

Trumps loses in nearly all hypothetical polls: Sore Loser?

Trump has not been pleased with the recent polls and seems he is lashing out after being over looked.

On Wednesday, the president accused pollsters of conspiring with Democrats against him, discounted the polls, and argued respondents had been wrongly swayed by the press. Not only did he attack those working at the polls, but he also had some things to say about Fox News. The president usually showed strong support for Fox News until the news was not in favor of him. Trump claims his polls will increase when he starts campaigning, even though he kicked off his campaign in June and has held campaign-style rallies since his inauguration. Instead of meeting these results head on, instead he turns to his usual tactics and attacks his usual suspects. He would be better off reminding the people sitting on the fence at the polls of his accomplishments in his term as president.

I think that Sean Collins does a great job writing this article and staying objective. For a second toward the end when he mentioned how Trump turned his anger toward the poll workers and the press i though he wouldn’t stay neutral but he recovered and told readers to be reminded of his accomplishments. Collins links a hand full of examples and sources to back up what he is saying. As a reader, i like looking at those articles that are linked to see what they say and if they correlate to what the writer is saying, and it all flowed, made sense, and was easy to read.

E-cigarette use amongst young adults: The danger behind it.

Doctors, FDA, and CDC officials have noticed a shocking trend of young adults using e-cigarettes not knowing the extreme dangers that follow.

Doctors all over the United States have found 450 possible cases across 33 different states. All of the patients had one thing in common: the use of e-cigarettes. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed five deaths were caused by e-cigarettes with exact medical symptoms. E-cigarettes are not healthy for your lungs and neither are your traditional e-cigarettes.

The New York Times reports on Dr. Dixie Harris, a pulmonologist at Salt Lake City hospital.  Harris has seen many young healthy patients admitted to the intensive unit with trouble breathing.

Her first patient, a man in his 20’s, was vomiting and had unexplainable headaches and pains. He also had trouble breathing. Harris believed that it was an infection in his lungs causing him troubled breathing but found nothing.

Only days later, several cases surfaced with the same symptoms. “It’s not typical [to see a young person] go to the ICU in that much distress without an obvious infection,” Harris told The New York Times. With these questions arising, doctors came up with a theory that the cause may be from vaping or THC oils, since all of their patients had that in common.

Another article, from Yale Medicine, discusses the stubborn lasting effects on the brain when young adults use e-cigarettes. Yale medicine explains, “When potentially risky behaviors experience an uptick in popularity, health researchers are never far behind- gathering data.”

In the article, these doctors describe that teens are not aware of how harmful cigarettes can be to their developing brains. Tests have proven that the brain does not stop growing until around age 25. E-cigarettes are seen to be “better for you” than cigarettes. This may be true, but the amount of chemicals found in e-cigarettes are just as damaging for the developing brain.

The part of the brain that is responsible for decision making and impulse control is not yet fully developed during adolescence. Young adults are at risk for long-term, long-lasting effects of exposing their developing brains to nicotine.

In an article from Yale medicine by Kathleen Raven, Yale medicine quotes,” Nicotine exposure to young adults can slow brain development in teens and affect memory, concentration, learning, self-control, attention, and mood.” Some of the brain changes are permanent and can affect your mood and ability to control your impulses as an adult.

Kathleen Raven from Yale medicine stresses that the suggestion to use e-cigarettes to “protect” them from using cigarettes is false and that there is no evidence to support that claim. Studies have shown that non-smoking youth who use e-cigarettes are more likely to try conventional cigarettes in the future which can cause more medical issues down the road.

FDA investigators found the company broke the law, “by selling or distributing them as modified risk tobacco products without FDA order in effect that permits such sale or distribution.” Acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless says, “JUUL has ignored the law, and very concerningly, has made some of these statements in school to our nation’s youth.”

The reason people use e-cigarettes is because they are less lethal than conventional cigarettes. When smoking a cigarette, the most toxic part is found in the tar. The major benefit of an e-cigarette is that they do not produce the tar or toxic gases found in cigarette smoke. Cigarettes are the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, killing 480,000 people every year

Hurricane Dorian heading toward Florida.

Image result for hurricane dorian

Hurricane Dorian made its first appearance in the Abacos Islands in the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane. Winds reached an excessive speed of 185 mph as well as 220mph gusts. Dorian took its time prowling through the Bahamas. The hurricane lasted 14 hours. The slower the storm moves, the more time it has to destroy communities in its path. If you’re living costal, those are the types of hurricanes to be very afraid of. As of this Monday, the hurricane moved down to a Category 4. This is nothing to be excited about because Category 4 hurricane winds range from 131 to 155 mph. Houses and shopping centers will be destroyed along with long- term power outages and water shortages. Not to mention humans being at risk of death in certain areas. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports, “Although the center of Dorian is forecast to move near, but parallel too, the Florida east coast, only a small deviation of the track toward the west would bring the core of the hurricane onshore.” The deadliest aspect of a hurricane tends to be storm surges. This is flooding cause by seawater being pushed onshore by winds. NHC predicts four-to-seven feet of storm surge along the Florida coast.

This article I believe is based off of human interest. In news writing such as this it is important to inform the reader on all of the facts and details about the hurricane. The way the author wrote this made it very easy for someone who doesn’t know much about hurricanes to better understand the severity of the situation. There are good pieces of information that were sourced from scientists that have studied natural disasters for years. I like articles that are concise and are straight to the point and that’s what this article was.

The Amazon.

As we all know, the Amazon rainforest has been engulfed in flames. The amazon is the worlds largest rainforest that contains millions of species of plants and animals. There are so many different species living there that they are not all accounted for. The forest contains over 40,000 kinds of plants and the 6,500 kilometers of river contains 3,000 kinds of freshwater fish.

As you might have heard, The Amazon is “the lungs of the planet.” This is true in the way that the forest absorbs about five percent of the CO2 making it important in helping prevent climate change. So, as you may have guessed already, this rain forest is pretty important.

Here is some peace of mind. The fires that continue to happen will not directly effect the planets oxygen. Scientist say the worlds oxygen supply is not directly at risk because the amazon absorbs the same amount of oxygen as they produce. This process is called photosynthesis.

Because of climate change over the past years, the rainforest is slowly shrinking into a tropical savannah, an environment characterized by rolling hills, tall grasses, and spare trees. This is something more people should be worried about.

The Change in Journalism.

The NPR decided to call President Trump’s tweets about a group of Democratic congresswomen, “racist.” In Keith Woods article, he explains how the use of objectivity in today’s journalism is used to obscure the deceptive biases that the people battle with daily.

Considering the implications of NPR’s outburst of the fully loaded word “racist”, people did not agree with that statement. It is hard to distinguish as readers if what these journalists are reporting is facts or a bias opinion. The problem with the way media reports these types of issues is it all ends up turning into argumentative noise.

Keith Woods has a great point when he explains that back when he first got into the profession, it wasn’t hard to decipher real journalism from aggressive media used to anger its audience. There is a lack of objectivity in journalism now because of the media. That isn’t how it is supposed to be. Journalists are supposed to report the facts whether they like or agree with those facts. If the media continues to lead with emotion rather than facts, the world will continue down this angry path.
