Story One
Starting off…
In La Paz, Bolivia a six-inch-long reptile called a Jararanko, translated to “lizard” in the Indigenous Aymara language, is used in place of traditional medicine.
The animal’s ground-up remains are known to them as a “lizard patch”, a supposed healing method to treat muscular alignments. Bolivian law allows Indigenous nations to kill the animals for traditional medicine as long as it’s used for subsistence purposes, within their ancestral territory, and with practices prior to the Spanish invasion.
Victoria Flores is a lady discussed in this article who grinds up the meat of the Jararanko in a stone mill and mixes it with wild herbs such as wichullo, black kettle, and arnica, until it turns into a pasty green mass that she places on top of her injury.
“There is no pharmacy, no medicines, none of that,” say traditional Andean healers who have sacrificed the Jararanko for medicinal use for generations. But scientists say it could do more harm than good.
Jordyn Carr spoke about how she would feel if she had to put a ground-up lizard on one of her basketball injuries and responded with “I would be skeptical about putting this animal on me, but if this was their only option, I would be willing to try it.”
Story Two
The next story that is going to be discussed… is about how…
Caitlin Clark became Iowa’s all-time leading scorer and finished with her 12th career triple double as the No. 3 Hawkeyes beat Northern Iowa 94-53 on Sunday.
Clark, the reigning (raining) national player of the year and a unanimous Associated Press preseason All-American, now has 2,813 career points, passing Megan Gustafson (Gust-tafson), who scored 2,804 points from 2015-19. While Luka Garza is the school’s men’s leader in scoring at 2,306 points.
Clark said she got a text message from Gustafson on Saturday night, encouraging her to break the record.
“Megan’s been our biggest fan on this whole journey,” Clark said. “Megan reached out to me last night and said, ‘You’re very, very deserving of this. Go out there and do it.’ It’s not the first time she’s reached out and texted me. She’s always there. And that’s not fake — Megan is one of the best people of all time.”
Clark also expressed “Records are meant to be broken,”. “So, I hope Iowa has a really great player one day who can break mine, too.”
Story Three
Up next….
Colorado stuns No. 1 LSU as Tigers become first reigning women’s champion to lose opener since 1995.
The No.20 Buffaloes hit 10 3-pointers in the 92-78 win over Tigers. The LSU women’s basketball team started last season 24-0 and finished its season by winning the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament.
This is not an ideal start for LSU. The season could still end with the same result as last year, but some reevaluation of the team needs to be done first in order to stop something like this from happening again.
The Tigers are the first defending champion to lose their season opener since UConn lost to Louisiana Tech in the first game of the 1995-96 season.
It is said that the Buffaloes’ 92 points scored are the most by any team against a Kim Mulkey-coached LSU team.
It makes sense that pieces might not be together yet for LSU considering they have a lot of new additions to their team. This is still a stunner in women’s college basketball though.
Jena Jenness speaks about her thoughts towards LSU losing to Colorado and expresses “I think that LSU has some talented players, but I think that they let their championship win go to their heads and they did not continue to put in the work in the off-season while other teams did.”
That is all for today, thanks for listening.
