Morningside News Analysis

Morningside setting a new enrollment record for international students is newsworthy. This news is something that prospective students, parents, students, facility, and staff would all find interesting.

Morningside Terri Curry, vice president for student life and enrollment spoke on this topic and expressed, “We are delighted to welcome our largest group of international students to Morningside. Their diverse cultures, experiences and perspectives enrich our academic community, fostering a global learning environment that is both inclusive and vibrant”.

The area where Morningside experienced the most growth was found in the advanced and nontraditional programs. The RN TO BSN program saw a total enrollment increase of 44%, the Doctor of Nursing Practice program realized a 33% increase in part-time students, the bachelor’s completion in education program saw a 14% increase in total enrollment, and the graduate education initial licensure teacher intern saw a 119% increase in full-time enrollment. Each of these programs have been designed for advanced and nontraditional students who hope to advance in their current profession or change careers, and also represent fields where demand for professionals is high.

Not only did enrollment rates rise, but Morningside also experienced growth by having a five percent improvement in its year one to year two retention rate. Mosely shared, “Our faculty and staff remain committed to doing everything possible to support our students as they persist toward graduation”.

These different growths look extremely good when looking at Morningside as a whole. It shows the community that they take pride in what goes into Morningside, as well as what comes out.

Polar Bear Press Release

Here at Midland Zoo, Homer our 16-year-old polar bear was found dead shortly after his feeding time. Homer could be described as a curious and playful polar bear. Midland Zoo is doing all it can to find out the cause of this death, in order to assure our visitors that nothing like this will happen again.

Chris Bacon spoke on this devastating event and stated,” We will determine how this bear died. Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo.”

The Midland Zoo is not worried that this is something that will set them back because polar bears have been seen thriving at this zoo since 1985. Bears have the privilege of being able to engage in a natural habitat that allows them to play in manufactured snow, dig in gravel, and hunt trout in the chilled pool. The bears are ambassadors for their wildlife relatives, educating zoo visitors about these threatening animals.

ChatGPT is the Future FINAL

ChatGPT is setting new standards in the artificial intelligence world.

ChatGPT has become insanely popular over this past year. Tons of users are starting to use this platform as a tool to have their questions answered instantly. ChatGPT is popular due to its advanced technology when answering questions.

Nowadays people do not have the patience to sit and scroll through tons of websites when looking up something on Google. ChatGPT allows individuals to get a response right at their fingertips, without the hassle of looking at a bunch of websites for one simple answer.

Sophomore Morningside student Jordyn Carr had this to say about ChatGPT, “I find it very useful. I use it when I write papers to give me prompts to talk about. It also helps me understand certain concepts that weren’t explained very well in class.”

Not only does ChatGPT provide answers, it also has an option that allows for people with a slight impairment to have the responses spoken out loud to them. It can also summarize the topics or concepts from a course for students with learning disabilities.

ChatGPT also has a tool that allows you to generate AI images. You can plug in any sort of description and it will generate an image for you. These images surface frequently on social media, and can also be very helpful. For example, writers can generate images for their online articles or newspapers. Artists can also use the tool as inspiration for their own art.

Addie Harris said this, “I’ve mostly just messed around on the image generator but I can see how people can benefit from it. I find some of the images on twitter to be very funny, but also weird at the same time.”

Although many benefits come with Chat GPT for students, it raises concerns for teachers and professors. Facility is worried about the lack of academic integrity among students and it leading to the reliance on artificial intelligence instead of them coming up with their own creative ideas.

Ross Fuglsang, the journalism teacher here at Morningside, spoke about his thoughts towards students using ChatGPT and expressed, “It’s a pain in the ass.”

This response is understanding when looking at a professor’s point of view. Professors want to see students’ work that reflects their thinking and not what is coming from ChatGPT.

Overall, ChatGPT can improve content quality, save time, and is a great tool used for learning. However, if this platform is fully depended on, it can cause plagiarism issues to arise and limit creativity. How society reacts to this up-and-coming innovation will shape the future of technology.

PRNewswire.com Analysis

The article that I chose to write about is titled, “The Salvation Army Calls On Donors To Help Their Neighbors in Need This Giving Tuesday.” The Salvation Army is the nation’s largest private provider of social services. They are asking for support from the public due to the rising number of evictions in the past 11 months. The Salvation Army made sure to announce that despite the rising operational expenses, they are committed to its mission of meeting human needs, without discrimination, no matter the cost. They also noted that with the donations from this “Giving Tuesday” that it will make a difference not only in your community but across the nation.

This article is different from news articles because the overall purpose of the press release looked different compared to what a news article would look like. The information was portrayed with a more formal tone and gave a quote from Salvation Army representatives. Overall, the message portrayed from Salvation Army in this press release was specifically tailored to a target audience to get individuals on board to donate to this organization to help people in need.

Mandi Anecdote Story

Many people who know Mandi could describe her as a generous person. Her personality radiates those around her with positivity. One example of her being a generous person was when she did got a gift for little girl through a operational Christmas gift program through Sunnybrook Community Church. The program allows the members to randomly pick a gender and age group of an individual who may not get any gifts for Christmas this year. This small act of kindness can go a long way for someone in both ends of the gift giver and receiver. Mandi mentioned that, “I loved the opportunity to give back to someone in need. It makes me feel happy to see the impact I can make with the help of this program.”

Food Description

A Pirouline Wafer can be described as something that flakes as soon you put it into your mouth. Once you bite into it you get a flavor burst of chocolate and hazelnut. The outside has a wafer texture that has swirls of chocolate around it. The inside has cream that makes the flavors of the chocolate and hazelnut match together nicely.

Story 3 Script

Story One

Starting off…

In La Paz, Bolivia a six-inch-long reptile called a Jararanko, translated to “lizard” in the Indigenous Aymara language, is used in place of traditional medicine.

The animal’s ground-up remains are known to them as a “lizard patch”, a supposed healing method to treat muscular alignments. Bolivian law allows Indigenous nations to kill the animals for traditional medicine as long as it’s used for subsistence purposes, within their ancestral territory, and with practices prior to the Spanish invasion.

Victoria Flores is a lady discussed in this article who grinds up the meat of the Jararanko in a stone mill and mixes it with wild herbs such as wichullo, black kettle, and arnica, until it turns into a pasty green mass that she places on top of her injury.

“There is no pharmacy, no medicines, none of that,” say traditional Andean healers who have sacrificed the Jararanko for medicinal use for generations. But scientists say it could do more harm than good.

Jordyn Carr spoke about how she would feel if she had to put a ground-up lizard on one of her basketball injuries and responded with “I would be skeptical about putting this animal on me, but if this was their only option, I would be willing to try it.”

Story Two

The next story that is going to be discussed… is about how…

Caitlin Clark became Iowa’s all-time leading scorer and finished with her 12th career triple double as the No. 3 Hawkeyes beat Northern Iowa 94-53 on Sunday.

Clark, the reigning (raining) national player of the year and a unanimous Associated Press preseason All-American, now has 2,813 career points, passing Megan Gustafson (Gust-tafson), who scored 2,804 points from 2015-19. While Luka Garza is the school’s men’s leader in scoring at 2,306 points.

Clark said she got a text message from Gustafson on Saturday night, encouraging her to break the record.

“Megan’s been our biggest fan on this whole journey,” Clark said. “Megan reached out to me last night and said, ‘You’re very, very deserving of this. Go out there and do it.’ It’s not the first time she’s reached out and texted me. She’s always there. And that’s not fake — Megan is one of the best people of all time.”

Clark also expressed “Records are meant to be broken,”. “So, I hope Iowa has a really great player one day who can break mine, too.”

Story Three

Up next….

Colorado stuns No. 1 LSU as Tigers become first reigning women’s champion to lose opener since 1995.

The No.20 Buffaloes hit 10 3-pointers in the 92-78 win over Tigers. The LSU women’s basketball team started last season 24-0 and finished its season by winning the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament.

This is not an ideal start for LSU. The season could still end with the same result as last year, but some reevaluation of the team needs to be done first in order to stop something like this from happening again.

The Tigers are the first defending champion to lose their season opener since UConn lost to Louisiana Tech in the first game of the 1995-96 season.

It is said that the Buffaloes’ 92 points scored are the most by any team against a Kim Mulkey-coached LSU team.

It makes sense that pieces might not be together yet for LSU considering they have a lot of new additions to their team. This is still a stunner in women’s college basketball though.

Jena Jenness speaks about her thoughts towards LSU losing to Colorado and expresses “I think that LSU has some talented players, but I think that they let their championship win go to their heads and they did not continue to put in the work in the off-season while other teams did.”

That is all for today, thanks for listening.

Stuart Scott Speech

Stuart Scott, an American sportscaster was awarded the Jimmy V Award at the 2014 ESPY Awards.

He spoke about how honored he was to win this award but Stuart also spoke on how he felt as if he did not deserve to be in a group with the other great people who have been awarded this award.

Stuart has been battling cancer, he talked about how his motto for this tough time was “I’m not losing. I’m still here, I’m fighting. I’m not losing.” He exclaimed that he amends that statement by giving words of wisdom by coming up with this inspirational sentence “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.”

Stuart Scott was tremendously thankful for this award and he made sure to mention that. He also expressed and gave a special shoutout to his daughters. Another thanks was given to everyone in his support system during this difficult time. Scott recognized, “This whole fight, this journey thing, is not a solo venture. This is something that requires support.”

This speech touched its audience, provided inspiration, and poked at the emotions of the people too.

Wildfire in Southern California Forces Thousands From Their Homes- News Comment #9

Thousands of people had to evacuate due to a wildfire in a rural area southeast of Los Angeles. More than 2,400 acres of land were burned in this tragic disaster. The fire started in Aguanga, a community in an unincorporated part of Riverside County. 500 homes were said to be under an evacuation warning. Another issue that was by The National Weather Service, they issues an air quality alert for the region through Thursday morning because of the wildfire smoke. It was said that “These strong winds can cause major property damage,” the Weather Service said. “They also increase wildfire risk because of the dryness of the winds and the speed at which they can spread a flame across the landscape.”

This is news because this is a serious topic that is affecting many in California right now. It is important that we are informed of events like this because it could easily happen anywhere else. Thousands of individuals were forced from their homes. The wind is only making matters worse for this wildfire. I am hoping that this fire can be taken under control as soon as possible.

They rely on this lizard to heal their pain. Now it’s endangered.
