The article I read was about an anit-Obama billboard taken down in Colorado. I think the billboard was offensive and should have been taken down, but I also know that the area the area where it was and it doesn’t surprise me that the billboard was there. I agree with the comment the woman made about defending the right to freedom of speech, but she was thrilled it was gone.

To Tan, or Not to Tan. Final

Indoor tanning is growing rapidly in the United States.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about one million people will tan every day.

Morningside had a tanning salon ten minutes away from campus. “I like that it is so close, because it doesn’t take very long to get there, tan, and come back,” said Ashley McConnell.

Almost 70 percent of those who go tanning are Caucasian woman from 16 to 29 years old said the A.A.D. McConnell was not surprised by this, “White girls want to look tan, I know I like to look good and being tan helps me with that.”

There are many dangers that come with tanning. One of the dangers of tanning is the connection to skin cancer. The UV light in tanning beds can also cause skin aging and eye damage.

Although tanning can be dangerous, there are some positives. A local tanning store owner said, “I get a lot of younger woman who are still in their teens go tanning to help with acne. Also, in the winter people get depressed when the sun is gone, and they go tanning to cure their depression.”

Seasonal depression is common in places where the season go from one extreme to the other. It is more common in woman then men, but seasonal depression can drastically affect people.

Doctors do not prescribe people to go tan at a salon; they just recommend getting more sunlight throughout the day. It may be hard for some get more sunlight, so they decide the next best thing is a tanning bed.

“I know in the winter I miss the heat of the sun, and even though I only lay in the tanning bed for fifteen minutes, I get the feeling I was sitting in the sun all day,” said McConnell.

Although tanning can help with depression, the cost of tanning can keep people away. Stasia Ott commented, “Tanning cost so much money, I am broke from college and would rather buy food. I also don’t want to ruin my skin and have wrinkles in the future.”

President Obama recently put a ten percent tax on tanning. The tanning store owner said she was a little worried the tax would affect her business, but so far there had been no impact.

McConnell said, “I know that tanning is expensive, so I save up all summer and have the money to spend in the winter. I have to tan, and the ten percent tax pissed me off, but it doesn’t make me want to stop.”

The A.A.D. predicts the year of 2010 is estimated to bring 2.6 billion dollars in revenue. “I am not surprised by this number. When you have T.V. shows like the Jersey Shore and their G.T.L., I think it influences people to go tanning in order to look good,” comments Ott.

The tanning store owner stated, “The tanning beds are not the only option, we also have spray tanning that has no health effects. There is the rumor that spray tanning can turn you orange, but if you go to the right place and know what shade your skin can handle, people can save money and their risk for skin cancer.”

McConnell says she is worried about the long term effects of tanning, but right now she is still young and can’t worry about the future too much.

Friday.

I loved this article!!! I think it’s funny and yet informative at the same time. The beginning catches your eye right away, and made me want to read the rest of the story. Breast Cancer Awareness is growing rapidly and it is nice to know if all the  promoting is working or not.

The warnings about tanning are out there, now it’s a matter of people listening to them.

The paper clip that is not silver.

My search began with a simple task, to find a paper clip that is not silver. I was shocked that I had to do such a pointless task. I began asking simple people in the library and got nothing but confused and odd looks. Some man must have been so confused by my question he gave me a silver paper clip. I just walked away.

I decided I needed to get serious about this task. So i climbed my way up those creepy, dark stairs. There was a faint scent of cherries. I asked four more people and still no non-silver paper clip. Then, I found Donna Galati. She was petite and quiet in her little corner office, but she pulled out her jar of paper clips, and these magical blue and yellow paper clips were there.

I aske her why she had colored paper clips, and her response was, “I get them off my kid’s papers, and I just don’t throw them away.”

Friday October 1st

The article I chose to write about this week was about colleges starting a car sharing program. The article caught my eye first because I can relate to it, and the concept of sharing a car sounds a little off.

The story did  a decent job in explaining what the program was about. Boise State is now “renting” cars out to students for eight dollars an our. They don’t have to pay for insurance or gas. I think the idea is great, a lot of freshman do not have a car, and also students from out of state do not need to bring their car with them. It’s also to help cut down the number of cars in the parking lots.

It also said the Colorado University has started a program like this, and I have heard of it before. I think Morningside could benefit from renting cars out because so many people complain about the parking, especially the people in the dorms.

K.S.A.! (Kick some A**)

This is the chant we say before every volleyball game. Every Time we say it, we know what needs to be done.   we say it all the time, it never gets old. I think this is quotable because it just rolls right of the tongue. KSA is also important to me because I am the one who started it and now our whole team loves it.

Friday!!

I choose this article because it was about my high school volleyball team. They won their home tournament for the first time since 2006, when I was a sophomore. I love hearing that my old team is finally making a comeback in high school. My sister will be a freshman next year and I hope they can maybe win another state championship.

The article was also written very well. It stated what happened, but there was a huge flaw. One of the names was spelt wrong and it looked like her name was Moran, instead of Morghan. I think flaws like that can take away credibility and respect for the newspaper.

Monday Work

Story 1

An armed robbery was committed last night at 450 Stanley Street. No one was hurt in the proccess, but the two robbers took an undisclosed amount of money.

Store owner, Barney Joseph, Jr., 43, was held at gunpoint by one of the robbers. Joseph does keep a pistol under his counter but felt unwise to use it.

Twenty-five years ago, while his father owned the store, there was a similar robbery. Unfortunately Josephs father was shot to death. Joseph commented, “I’d rather part with my money than with my life.”

Story 2

The only visible scene is several rows of charred wooden supports at the Suffolk Downs Race Track in Boston, after a fire burned the building down.

There were no human casualties, but the stable was holding twenty-five horses. Only ten were able to escape. Thirteen thoroughbred and two saddle horses were killed. The cause of the fire is unknown, but Arson is highly suspected.

Jockey, Albert Ramos from Miami, Fl, stood and watched the workers clean up the mess.

“(Those) are my best friends,” he said, pointing to the surviving horses. “I love horses more than I do people.”

Officials are looking into why the fire started in the middle of the barn. Jim Connery, fire chief comment, “The fire near exploded near the center of the barn. Flames were shooting out of the building when we got here. The fire is definitely suspicious.”

Hopefully the officials and arson squad can find out who and why this fire was started.

Friday Article

I watched a video about all the new 3-D technology. I found it interesting because I didn’t know about all the new 3-D equipment. From the video games to laptops, I find it all a little overwhelming. Personally, I would not want to sit in my home wearing those glasses while watching a movie. The laptop is what really surprised me; it’s like everything is being made 3-D, whether it needs to be or not.

I think 3-D is a waste of money because after twenty minutes, your eyes adjust to the 3-D. I know I am not the only one with this opinion, but there are so many people who are obsessed with watching everything in 3-D. It will be interesting to see what technology will be invented next.
